Back in the early 60s, Dick Dale and his Deltones would play at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa, Ca. The music was very fast, loud, and would get thousands of young people worked up into a frenzy. Not unlike punk.
Although Dick Dale did covers of Hava Nagila, Miserlou, and other Middle Eastern influenced tunes, many of his other songs were structured around I-IV-V chord progressions, including uptempo 4/4 time signatures. So yeah, I can see the similarities between Surf and punk.
Not to be overlooked, is the fact that Agent Oranges rhythym section of Drummer Dusty Watson and Bassist Sam Bolle has also backed Dick Dale, as well as Guitarist Dave Wronski forming the band Slacktone.
Maybe someone should ask Watson and Bolle if THEY think there are any similarities between Surf and Punk.
