Double Bass Sushi Box tube preamp pedals (DB thread)

I just picked up an Elementary, with 10Mohm impedance. Played a big banquet room (8,000 Sq ft., 250 people dining & dancing, military affair) last night with no FOH support, so my signal chain was Lifeline > Elementary > PJB BP200 > PJB C2 (monitor), BP200 DI and Remic > AI Clarus > 2 Acme B1s . B1s were stacked 10 ft in front of me with the C2 facing back. Sound was way better than expected, with plenty of headroom. The Elementary plays nicely with the Lifeline, and the AI HPF dealt with the boominess (we were in a corner, unfortunately). After 25 years of amplifying the big gal, I think I have a system that works beautifully. Many thanks to all the discussions I've monitored here - it's nice having other's experience to inform my own!

It was one of the last custom shop pedals he made, it was supposed to be a raw enclosure with simple graphics and the input impedence mod but his printer died so it was stalled for a few days. I was hoping he would just write everything with a sharpie but he ended up using a simple sans serif font, Letraset style, basically hand made lettering.

Im inclined to want more of a MORE pedal I think and I wonder what Jeff thinks: Since I use the Grace to combine two Yamahikos, seems like having just one eq and the tube just a pedal for warming (not doubling the eq) (maybe both the Grace and More on a tiny pedalboard) would be the bomb....course then I start thinking that if you had 2 of these little MORE boxes one for each pickup you could run the Yamahikos into them first and still be way under a rack width.

My $0.02… the More panel is best after everything else. The very best sound I got with it was in the FX loop on my Clarus. The More is a subtle but powerful pedal and is at its best adding to a more finished signal.

I think the other Sushi Box pedals are better at buffering the input signal ala the Sarno Black Box or Red Eye but with EQ points based (loosely) on classic tube preamp EQ circuits.

I will say that high voltage tube circuits can really enhance piezo pickups in general.

I had no luck with the More and the Felix. I've been looking for something that could sound like an orange ad200 or the first generation WW amps and was hoping adding More to the Felix would get me there...

More sounding good with my synths though.

Just picked up a Vampire Slayer pedal from @SemiDriven . Sounds really good as an actual buffer before my amp. Signal chain:
Upright -> Realist Lifeline -> Vampire Slayer -> PJB BG-400

I will post other combinations I've found useful for upright ITT if anyone is interested.

SO....the Vampire Slayer looks like a cool option if say you have a Felix and want just tube warming in the FX loop or in front of (which is how I have been running the Sarno V8 or BB lately) but the website says "archived" which I presume to mean not made anymore....too bad, it seems really like a great option if you have a SS preamp and dont want to duplicate the eq points. That said, I do find that I leave the eq on the Felix flat (but use the blend knob and HPF's and the Imp toggles) and then use the treble knob (Baxandall EQ) on the V8 to dial in the highs...
But I really like the idea of a micro tube warmer like the Vampire Slayer plugged into the Felix and bundled on a little pedal board with a tuner. I go back and forth between velcro' ing the Felix and Tube pre onto the top of the powered speaker (homebrew combo amp) and having the Felix on the floor (where more and more I like it for the mute, Boost, short leads, no turning around convienience) except there are more cords...the Vampire Slayer (or any of Sushi Box's little micro tube pre's) on a small pedalboard (with only 1 cord and power) seems like a great solution.
Honestly everytime I remove the tube warmer from my setup I really miss it and the system sounds colder and more distant.

You can buy PCBs for the Vampire Slayer and other discontinued pedals (or other experiments, such as the Nobelium) on Sushi Box's sister site, C2C Electronics. But you also will find people selling these on places like Music Go Round or other sites where they might not know what they're in possession of. I purchased a Lab Rat and a Space Heater from Music Go Round for under-market prices compared to here or Reverb, so keep your eyes peeled if you're looking for one. (You could always ask other TB members to see if they'll make you one! Don't forget that we have some real electronic wizzes here!)

I was talking with my man Brad Sarno about the wonderful @Sushi Box FX and he was stoked with ideas and inspiration and gratitude for the open, inviting, experimentation and idea sharing going on. Brad is deeply into the pristine, clean, quiet, side of making tube gear and has been subsequently working on pedal versions of his BB and preamp .They are just in development but I am super stoked.
...still gunna buy a SushiBox.

I subbed with a big band yesterday and used my new Nobelium from C2C/SushiBoxFX and it really blended nicely with my Yamahiko. I did a full review of the experience on the C2C mega thread in the Effects forum. It was good enough that it's making me rethink some of my design choices on the open source preamp I've been tinkering with. Mainly shifting away from the whole tonestack/preamp idea and more of the tiny blend/phase tailpiece option I've been working on.
