SVT 4 PRO????

Had, and heavily used, a US made 4-Pro for several years. It delivered every time and was as reliable as anything else out there - never had a problem with it. I've just discovered, for me, simple is better which is why I now use a TH500.

I had an SVT4-Pro, and got rid of it because I had nothing but problems with it. I was using it with the 810E cab. I bought it brand new, but was really disappointed with the power. I was running it mono-bridged (1200W) to the cab because I wanted a lot of headroom, it just didn't seem all powerful and I was not happy with the tone. After having it looked at after two months of owning it, some of the pre-amp tubes were already microphonic. Goodbye.

I got rid of it and bought the SVTCL for my 810E cab. HUGE difference in loudness (all-tube power) and tone. The headroom I was desiring was there. Yeah, the head weighs a ton, but I have never had a bad night with that head.

I would describe your volume issue user error as well.

People need to start understanding that Ampeg heads have a lot of power/volume tied up in the gain and EQ. If you are under utilizing these then you will find the head lacking, but only due to your own error.

+1

I ran my 4-Pro with an Acme B-4, which is pretty much as power hungry a cab as you can find, and I had no problems keeping up with a very loud band.

I found a long time ago that the 4Pro is a different sort of animal....:D

I have always ran my gain at 4-5 O'Clock and used the Master as a volume control. Seems to work well.

Now, let me state right here, for the record, that I PREFER my Heritage CL OVER the 4Pro AND the 7Pro any day of the week and three times on Sunday! To me, there is no comparison.

However, (at least for me) different jobs require different rigs. When we are playing Casinos and there is no back-line (doesn't happen often, but it does happen) I use the smaller 7Pro with either the 610 or sometimes the 810.

For a lot of jobs, I prefer the 4Pro and the 610. Great sounding rig and more than loud enough if there isn't PA support.

We have played REAL small rooms where I used the MarkBass 121P. Again, not often, but it DOES happen. Hell, we played a coffee house in Tulsa (for a friend) where I ran straight into the PA....

We have also played outdoor events where I have used the Heritage CL with the 810 AND the 610. Not often, but is HAS happened.

Pays to be prepared!! :D

I would hardly say it was user error. I have a very good working knowledge of amps, eq's, gain control, etc. I also made sure that I wired the Speakon connectors correctly for mono/bridged mode on the cable from the head to the cabinet (a common mistake that people make when they try to run the SVT4-PRO in mono/bridged mode).

I sum it up to the fact that I probably got a lemon. It didn't turn me off from Ampeg products, because obviously that's what I mostly use. I was just offering my experience with the head.

Cheers!
