SVT CL question

The CL is not heavy when your drummer helps you carry it. Screw it. I can carry his light drums in and he can help me with my CL.

Yeah, an SVT-3 compared with a CL is just wrong. I had a Pro 3 and it's not even CLOSE to the tone of the CL, which is why I bought it. Now, I really screwed myself because I never considered a cabinet to play out of.

Now, not only am I taking out of my savings in a recession to find a cabinet, I might have to get 2 so I can also use it for practicing in the apartment.

I am up and down about the 8x10. I will never be able to play loud with it because we're not really getting those kind of gigs.

How the hell do I use a set up like that? I am confused as all hell on what I should get to pair with my CL right now.

A 4x10 would be awesome, but I haven't seen one for sale in some time, and I won;t buy one new. But so many CL owners say a 4x10 won't do it justice. Why the hell not?

I am really struggling over what cabinet to get for the type of gigging we do. And I wonder if it matters. If we got a gig, the 8x10 is the one to use no matter what, if we played at a huge club or a tiny bar.

How about a 410HLF? Midsized, 4 ohms, easier to haul around than a fridge.

I use my CL+410HLF for practice at home (condo) on occasion. There's no way I can push it to where it sounds good, but it works fine. It doesn't matter what cab you're running it through, 300 watts of tube goodness is going to be loud when you crank up the amp enough to start singing.

Eric, that is actually what I prefer. A 4 ohm 4x10 classic, but I cannot find one used right now.

I just fear the 8x10

I think the 810 is a better sounding cab with the CL, but the logistics of hauling the thing around just didn't make sense for me (vehicle, old back, etc.). I'm not sure that the 410HLF is the best sounding 410 in the world, but it does what I need and sounds pretty good for my needs.

I had the same issue with finding a used 410HLF, and ended up just biting the bullet and bought a new one. Keep looking and you might get lucky. In addition to eBay and craigslist, be sure to check out gbase.com. Good luck!

While I have nothing but respect for those who like the HLF series, I should say that it's an acquired taste. It's got a very heavy bottom end, much heavier than the 810. Some love it, some think it's extremely muddy. I'm one who thinks it's muddy.

They had a 4x10 HLF 4 ohms at GC today used for $479. I thought it was a bit high priced. The logo was missing and it had some tears on the tolex. It had the dolly bar and rollers.

I played through it with the CL head they had and there was a loud static. I changed to the Pro-3 and there was just a very light hum, probably normal.

I didn't get it. I wouldn't want to pay more than $350 for it, and I a guy is willing to sell me his 8x10 for $450 right now

I don't know what the heck to do. I don't mind lows. I am not a slapper, don't need a ton of badazz mids.

I have an 810 and two of the BA combo amps, but I find myself using a Fender G-DEC a lot for practice. Can run music input to practice with and use headphones or speaker output, plus drum loop, etcv. I'm sure the bass version would be better. These types of small amps come up all the time on ebay. BTW have you seen the 810 yet, hope its in good shape to match your new head, photos?

If you are up for handing the size of an 810, that sounds like a pretty good price. If the 410HLF had issues, skip it unless you can really get them down in price. The 810 is tall and heavy, but the footprint isn't any bigger than the 410. For me, the 810 is just too much to handle when it has to go anywhere, but it sure sounds good once you get it there.

The music sounds good, the SVT-CL will add a lot to your tone, as would the 810; you'll really drive the group. I'd say you should take your head over there and play the 810 and see how you feel. Ask him to hold it for a few days if you want to think it over, but at $450 if its in good shape functionally and cosmetically you could sell it no problem if you change your mind.

Well, I have a bad back and it won't help it/ I can always get help to carry it on stairs or whatever, but what is the real use of an 8x10 cabinet when gigging?

I am thinking a 4 ohm Avatar 4x10 and maybe later someday get a 15 inch 4 ohm and knock the tube amp down to 2 ohms.

The real use is that it sounds good! That fact still wasn't enough to overcome my own vehicle and bad back issues.

That certainly is a reasonable path to take. I used my CL with a Avatar 210+115 setup for a while and it did just fine. I sold that setup because I got irritated with hauling 2 cabs.

I'd go with a 6x10 neo if possible, and if the Ampeg-CL has a DI-out, buy a small mixer and use headphones. Living in an apartment does have it's down falls as well as living with neighbors. I run my tube amps thru a Mackie board, and turn the volume on my amp down. Seems to work just fine. Provided that the Ampeg-CL has a DI out and you must keep your amp hooked up to your speakers so it "sees a load". Any opinions on this fellas?

Well, I've heard it all now.
Avatar doesn't make any 6x10 neos. Not sure anyone does. I will probably just buy the damn 8x10 and I guess I will only use them for gigs. But it will just look weird using that monster on stage. Never seen a band use one that I can remember.
