I have both an 810 and a 610HLF. I'm not sure that the 810 is actually noticeably louder then the 810.

The 2 cabs sound different for sure. While I prefer the 810 for tone, the 610 is in the same ballpark, is a lot lighter and a tad smaller width-wise making it easier to haul and to fit on tighter stages.

Plugging the ports on the 610 removes some of the low end bump on the 610 and cleans it up a bit.

I'd say the 610 gets you 90% of the way there of the 810.

It's really fun to run 'em both!

Yep. The HLF part stands for Horn Low Frequency, ie it has a horn to produce more high end and ports to help with the low end / make things muddier...

Personally I wanted the 810E to go with my CL as it is a sealed cab with no horn, but I wasn't too keen on the overall size and weight. I went with the Bergantino NV610 instead. 6x10, no horn, sealed, reasonably light and a great tone.

I went with the 4x10 Avatar.

Price $529. Weight: 60 pounds. Bad back now.

versus the used 8x10 ampeg: $450. 140 pounds. Back operation.

The 8x10 is just too much for what I am doing right now and it would look just odd up on the stage with my band.

I am happy with the "Smurf"! Although I haven't heard it yet :)

It's unnecessary. The tonal differences aren't that different to me. I play it through my 2x12 and 1x10 set up now for the 4ohms and it sounds good. I plugged it into an 8x10 at GC and sure, it was better, but it was at a gain of 2 and volume of 3 and it was just too freaking loud. I couldn't get it much lower than that, so I doubt I'd ever be able to really get the true tone of an 8x10 anywhere live unless we start getting gigs at the 9:30 club in DC which will take many years if ever. And even then they'd mic me so it would still be overkill. We're not playing Slayer.

I think your Avatar cab choice is fine for your needs. If you ever need to upgrade, there is usually a pretty good market for Avatar cabs. Although the 810 is a great match for the CL, sometimes the realities of life (bad backs, etc.) mean we have to make other choices to suit our needs. Regardless of whether it's and Ampeg or Avatar cab, the CL is still going to make a good sounding rig with either cab. Just enjoy it.
