Getting ready to make the switch from amp to in ear. Right now I am playing a custom M-bass, I have a tone bone, and H2O chours and delay pedal. Going to be playing country music. Any advice about what will give me more definition? What are some of your thoughts or discoveries for getting the best tone?

It's all about budget. I had a chance to demo the JH Audio JH16's and they were the best sounding things I've ever stuck in my ears. But at $1200 they darn well better sound sublime (and that's not including the trip to an approved audiologist for custom molds). I've also had low-end models with generic foam or rubber tips that weren't much better than iPod earbuds. The good news is that the choices are expanding rapidly. Do a search here and you'll see all sorts of interesting recommendations.
One thing is certain though: custom molds will always deliver better isolation and better low-end than generic earbuds. However, the molds are made with a specific brand & model of in-ear monitor in mind; they are not interchangeable.

+1 to the custom molds. I wouldn't suggest doing IEMs without them.
I recently ordered a new set of IEMs from these guys (I've heard really good things). You could call them up and they would be able to walk you through which model would be best for your needs. Ask for Andre or Yolanda. Their prices are reasonable, and I was able to do the molds myself at home.

oddly enough, i like my off-the-shelf buds (westone UM3Xs) because there is a little leakage; it allows me to hear the drums without having to pipe them into my ears, while still being quiet enough to do what IEMs are supposed to, which is save your hearing.
granted, i use them for playing guitar, so with bass, a better seal means better all-important low end. you're just more dependent on getting the mix exactly right, because that's all you get.

+1 for the Alien Ears. I've had a set of Quad drivers for about a year now and they sound terrific. Also as a benefit the ringing in my ears has totally subsided. I'd never go back to an amp on stage.
I can vouch for Alien Ears. I went with the triple drivers and they deliver the mix wonderfully. And they have fantastic customer service - very kind and helpful.
I am thinking of getting a set of Alien Ears C3 (triple driver) in ears. I see that they are getting some good reviews on this form but all the post seem to be a couple of years old. Anyone using these in-ears currently and do you think it is worth the cost?
