They are an authorized SWR (Fender) reseller, and have
factory replacements.
Changing to a random speaker can totally change the
units performance.

Just for the record, I recently emailed SWR regarding a question a fellow TB'er had about the country of origin for the manufacture of speakers for the current Goliath III cabs. I received a reply within ten minutes. I'll paste the address and response below.

We have never manufactured any of our SWR Sound Corporation brand bass speaker enclosures in China . All of our current Goliath series enclosures are produced at our manufacturing facility in Corona , California , United States
Indeed, all of our Goliath series enclosures currently still utilize custom-designed ohm PAS drivers

FWIW, I've always had good response from SWR with questions although they did decine to help individual customers after Hurricane Katrina ( I asked them to sell me a GIII crossover at cost, they told me I would have to go to a dealer)

That seems ridiculously expensive. That price is up in the Beyma price range.
Before I paid that kind of money, I'd do some more research and either find a cheaper replacement with similar T/S parameters or a suitable Beyma or other high end driver.
Eminence makes some killer neo15" drivers that would work well. I'd call Eminence, explain what I had and get their input. A neo would save you at least 5/6 lbs. as well as money. Measure the internal cab volume and ports as that is an important parameter when replacing drivers.

Just came across this thread -- some years after it was last attended -- but thought I'd add to the conversation for anyone who chances upon it:
I recently purchased a used Black Beauty (the older series, with the script logo) and pulled the speaker (as I always do, just to see it; I can't ever leave well-enough alone) and it has the same serial number as the original poster mentioned. If it is indeed made by Panasonic, it's nonetheless a really nice driver! I've beat the hell out of it (for fun) and it's tone is pure and response is thumpy -- very nice, IMHO. The cast frame for the thing is definitely one of the coolest I've ever seen, too (yeah, I know nobody will ever see it ... but still ...), and the magnet is a monster.
If FMIC went "cheap" on this one I still believe it's a quality speaker. It sounds as good as my Son of Bertha with my 350X on top. (So why did I buy the BB? I have no idea. I have so much SWR stuff it'd make you sick.)
