I had two 12-stacks and two 12-packs for a while for the 12x12 stack-o-doom, but I eventually sold the 2x12's so I am back to the meager 8x12 as well :)

I just bought an SWR Headlite amp, and I'm getting a nice Goliath II in the next couple of days.

I used SWR about 12 years ago. I had a Workingmans combo and a Basic 2 way cab.

I always wanted some of the 'pro' gear, but at the time it was quite rare and therefore expensive over here.

I keep seeing in adverts for used cabs that the speakers have been upgraded or replaced. Is there some sort of weakness in them ? Are they particularly prone to breaking ?

I feel you should have quite a bit more speaker (watts) than amp. I like the amp to fart before the speaker so you get the maximum potential out of the amp. I also feel SWR is border line (at least in the older units) on speaker to amp power. I had a very nice Super Redhead (350W) and the speaker were 175W each. That makes 350w but the speakers would give out and start distorting when the amp still had a lomg way to go. I went way over board and put in Emminence KappaPro 500W speakers, so 1000W in speakers for a 350W head. Wow what a difference, a lot more amp and thunderous punch from the cabinet. I always try to double the speaker power to the amp. I use a Studio 220 alot with an Avatar 1x12 500W 4 ohm cab, fantastic setup with plenty of power.

There are more than one simple answer on your rattling problem.

1) maybe your power amp starts clipping (keep in mind that power output has not much to do with position of volume knob, so 6/10 could be at certain cicumstances full power output)-but i think this is less propable option as TE should have good power amp section.
2) your speakers have lost glue joint of speaker edge ( ive just gone through similar problem. Speaker rattles at low volume, few minutes with wood glue has solved this)

3) maybe you are pushing to much low frequencies through "poor" 10" speakers.
Try to lower your bass level or turn off any "deep" switch. In my experience such frequencies are hardly heard, and 10" can neither handle nor reproduce them.

If I boost bass about 5dB on my SWR 350 speakers starts jump like kid on trampoline but I dont hear any significant bass increase in my sound - just subtle bass boost which is way different from same boost when Iam playing through my 15". With 15" I get massive low end support. Thats the limit of 10", great punchy sound but not much bass frequency margin.

My personal bet after option 3 (less difficult to lower your bass boost at first) is option no.2. Try each of you speaker if there is any lose speaker edge. Take something like pen or drum stick and carefully push on speaker edge of each speaker. If you found some movement, you have you culprit ;).

Here's my new SWR rig.

A Headlite and a Goliath II cab. I want to get a Goliath Junior to go with it.

I do think the Headlite looks a bit silly stuck on top of such a big cab. The two together sound amazing though.

What bigger head sounds like the Headlite ? I'm using the Marcus Miller pre shape.

I'd like to try a couple of other cabs too, maybe a Triad or a 'son of Bertha' with a Goliath Junior.

This has been my only gripe with SWR,I love the sound but I don't understand why they amplify sound down to 10-20hz (guessing) you can't hear it and it eats up your amps power and damages speakers.
I had a studio 220 amp and sold it for that reason,my Grand Prix preamp has a 30hz switch on it finally.

Everything else seems fine. Should probably run a x-over to filter out the lows going to the Goliath and send them on to the 1518 cab instead....

I just bought a used Megoliath from an Ohio Guitar Center... An SM-1500 is next on the list.
Can anyone tell me a good place to find one reasonably? I tried the closest dealer and the best they could do is $2149... not much help. Ebay has a few but not much better.
I've fallen for SWR since playing through the 20th Anniv Redhead that I bought from Tony Franklin a few years ago.
