SWR Goliath III replacement speakers

What did you go with? I have an SWR Goliath III that I need two speakers for, so might as well do all 4 since it's old. Mine is 700 Watts program at 8 ohms. The closest I can find is the Eminence Delta 10-B ... but may spend a little more for the Kappa Pro 10-A which is 1000 Watts program since I have an amp to push that. Anyway, in the meantime I have two new lightweight Fender rumble cabs that are both 2x10 and 350/700 as well (continuous and program) ... they sound amazing, but I just don't want to sell my SWR for nothing when it's a beast and I can re-speaker it and keep it for bigger gigs. Anyway, sorry for the long post ... just curious what speakers you got??

The Delta has a much higher power handling than the original speaker. The 700 watt cabinet rating is RMS, not program. The driver used is a PAS device with a very low moving mass, fairly short Xmax and a power handling of 175 watts RMS with high sensitivity. This driver has a somewhat unique extended high mid response. The problem with the Kappa (and the Delta to a lesser extent) is that high mid extension and uniformity suffers compared with t he PAS. You might look at something like the Eminence Legend CA10 series, but you may have to alter the porting whenever you use a driver with different parameters. Alternately, you might look at the Beta 10A (the same comments about porting adjustments apply). The Delta might also work, but will probably prove a bit darker. All three of these drivers should be more robust than the original driver.

I don't know of any good aftermarket recone kits for the PAS drivers. At one time I attempted to develop one but it was more difficult than it seemed as there were some inherent weaknesses that needed to be improved in order for reliability to be high enough for more modern times. Doing this and recreating that unique tone was too difficult to be practical without investing more than the recone market justified (unfortunately). Maybe somebody has been successful, I don't know.

I didn't change anything yet but if I do I would go for the Eminence CA10. The other speakers you mention might fit too, but I think they are way too different from the SWR speakers. I know it's always tempting to go for higher wattage speakers, but that doesn't mean you will gain more volume. Also take in consideration that a cab is designed with some very specific dimensions. So I edvise you to sctick to what matches your current speakers. And to me it's without any doubt the CA10

The driver used is a PAS device

Are you sure of that? I knwo the Goliath II used PAS for sure, but not sure at all for the Goliath III. Maybe the first versions of the GIII but not the later versions. SWR used "custome Eminence" for the GIII. That's the reason why I advised him to go for the Eminence CA10

If you can provide me the dimensions of the cabinet, including port dimensions I can reverse engineer it and see what the tuning frequency is. That way we can have a look at what drivers would match as far as the tuning of the cab goes. And once we find matching drivers we should look for the one with an extended mid response.
Btw. years ago I did try out the Delta 10b, I found it a very mediocre driver. Mids sounded honky and it's excursion is very limited, when it exceeds 3mm excursion distortion becomes clearly audible (and an ugly distortion it is).

I am extremely interested in you feedback too. I guess you need internal dimensions, not external dimensions?
Just in case, here's what SWR provides as information:

Impedance: 4 or 8 ohm models available
Power Handling Capacity: 700 Watts RMS
Sensitivity: 105 dB SPL @ 1W1M
Frequency Response: 105 dB @ 1W1M (-3dB@ 40Hz and 15KHz)
Dimensions (H x L x P) : 641 x 584 x 467 mm
Weight: 89 lbs.

I estimate the internal volume around 120 -130 liters, which is 30 - 32 per driver. Since it's a ported cab I really need the port dimensions to determine the tuning frequency. So I need the port width x height x depth. :)
Btw. are these cabs 8ohms?

I'll measure and provide you that once I'm back home. I own 2 GIII so if you need any further information, lets me now.
The cabs are available both in 4 and 8 ohms versions.

My bet on a Eminence CA10 ;)
True, but do you own the 4 or 8 ohm version?

The CA10 may be a good contender, but to know if it's the best option we need to check the tuning frequency of the cab. If I look at the CA10's (4, 8, 16 and 32 ohms) their TSP's are not consistent, so each one will perform differently in that cab.

Great to know!! I own two 8 ohms version of the GIII.
Her's what I found about the SWR Goliath I (not the III):
Internal Volume: 4.0 cubic feet
Port area: 20 square inches

Could this help you?
My guess is the internal volume is accurate and same as the GIII, however not the ports

Ok, 4 cu ft is approx. 114 liters = 28.5 liter per driver for the Goliath I, if the external dimensions are the same then it's very likely that the internal volume is the same too.

I really need the exact port dimensions, else I can not determine the tuning frequency.

Yes, I am sure the Goliath III used the PAS drivers until they became unavailable. Unfortunately, I do not have any of the information on the Eminence driver that was used in the last production runs, but the number of cabinets using the Eminence driver were vets small compared with the number using the PAS driver.

My best guess is the CA-10, BUT the porting must be investigated and changed if necessary.

The porting between the factory PAS models and factory Eminence models may not be identical either, but I do not have that information.

I am familiar with this because I worked for the company that owned SWR.

If I can be of any then. I own both versions of the GIII. The old one with black grill banana and jack input, and the chrome grill with jack inputs and speakon inputs.
However, I'd be surprised the old one has PAS speaker and the new one Eminence as they sound exactly 100% the same!
I've never noticed any GIII with different ports though.

Great to see you've also worked for SWR! I've been using their cabs since forever.

True, but how far does the "shelf" extend into the cabinet? This is what I mean with the "depth" of the port.
Right, and it's possible that this depth is different for the latest model cabinets that used the Eminence drivers.
