It is WAY more than just a box with speakers. EVERYTHING is in the details IF you care anything about performance.

This afternoon I will pull my speakers out of my GIII and measure everything ... I believe the speakers have part numbers on them that I looked up the one time I pulled one out to check it, but unfortunately I didn't save it ... found it on the internet though at the time, just didn't write it down for some dumb reason. Anyway, as soon as I do that I'll send measurements and the speaker info from the current speakers with photos. Thanks guys, love this site.

That's the depth of the shelf right?
So what is the port area? (width x height ?)

Edit: I used a picture to measured the port area, it should be approx. 54 x 3 cm.
Now, if I put the parameters in Boxsim I get a tuning frequency of approx 42hz, it looks like their goal was to get the tuning of the fundamental of the low E. :)

Because of the very low tuning all four of the CA10's perform approx the same (see graph below).

All four drivers have a rather high Qes, therefore it is better to have it tuned rather low when you go ported. These drivers are suited for sealed and for larger ported designs. Performance wise it sits somewhere between a sealed cab and an optimally tuned ported cabinet (with drivers suited for ported designs) which would have more sensitivity in the low mids.

If you don't change the tuning of the cab I would use the CA10, it's the most fitting replacement for the original drivers. The Beta10 would perform approx the same but has a more pronounced peak in the mids so the "character" will be different.
Btw. other drivers may also have trouble fitting into the cabinet, the CA10 is not round (just like the original drivers) and therefore made to fit in these SWR cabs.

Well, "tuning" (in this case) would be altering the tuning frequency of the port, e.g. when you increase the depth of the port you will lower the tuning frequency, shortening it will increase the tuning frequency. For the CA10 I would leave it as it is.
If you want more midrange (500 - 1500hz) then you would need a different driver or a totally different concept.

Awesome information you guys! Two of my cones are shot, and I've been following this thread to see which replacements would be best. It looks like there are a couple of variations of the CA-10s. Which ones would work best? Please excuse my ignorance, but I have no idea how to find out if my cab is 8 Ohms or 16 Ohms. It's a SWR Goliath III with the chrome grate and SpeakOn output, so I guess it's a later model.? I know that it's frustrating helping newbs, but it really is much appreciated. Thanks!!

On the back the cab. That's where you can find if it's a 4 or 8 omhs version

I did run a simulation on this one, and it performs approx the same as the other CA drivers, but! This model has a larger xmax, my simulation shows no powerdip between 60 - 100hz like the other CA models do. As far as I am concerned I would choose the CA1059.
Disclaimer: I could only do a simulation on the 16ohm version of the CA1059, they don't have the specs of the 8 ohm version published (yet).
