SX basses???

they're made from the same woods as a $1000 fender, but with cheaper electronics/hardware. by cheaper, i don't mean bad, they just don't say bartolini on them. buy one, throw a decent set of strings on it, and you have the cheapest workhorse bass ever. if you covered the headstock logo with a fender sticker, noone in the audience would know the difference...

Lots of information on them here. Search Essex (SX).

Most people seem to agree (with some exeptions) that they offer a lot of bang for the buck, and are much better than the price would suggest.

I have used one extensively for the past 4 years with good results.

Look around this forum. There will almost always be an SX thread of some sort on the first couple of pages of the forum.

I like the SX model she's playing. Nice fretboard.

I just bought an SX Jazz bass one of the newer ones, SJB 75 B MRD.
It's a version of a 75 Jazz bass with a Metallic red body, maple fretboard with black block inlays, black neck binding, and the typical jazz setup for pickups, tuners and bridge. It seems that SX has improved their basses by 3 times!
This thing is perfect! It's better than any, ANY Fender Iv'e played!
Im planning on getting a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz some time in the near future, but if SX is putting out basses like these, I may get about three more of them and scratch the Geddy! Go for one of the better ones, $149.00 to $179.00 you won't regret it!

I got thier Jazz bass with creme binding on the neck. I was actually really shocked when it came out of the box. The finish is really incredible! Its very pretty but it play like butt out of the box! I bought it for a travel bass but honestly its my best looking bass in my line up.

Heres what I recommend:

- Change the bridge(Higher guages dont fit through the hole)

- Change the strings(Very light guage d'addarios break in a heartbeat)

- Give it good set up (When mine arrived the higher frets were sky high!)

- Enjoy!

I've owned 2 of them. My daughter has a P bass version now, and I had a J style 5 string.

Not bad basses for the money. You can do a LOT worse, you can also do a lot better.

Good platforms to mod, decent off the bat, but they will usually need a bit of touch up and tweaking. Depending on what you get it could be minor, or major.

What's your experience level, what do you have now.
