SX Pickups

I dig my SX PJ a bit (put flats on it recently), and it sounds pretty great at bedroom volumes.. At gig volume, though, the pickups kinda suck.

How do the stock P pups sound? I got an SPB-57 on the way...

While i don't have an SX P, i do have an SX P/J. While i like both engaged, the P sounds just as good when soloed.

To the OP, i have a MIM Jazz and the SX P/J and they both sound great and at about comperable levels of great. They DO sound different, but that's the cool thing about having multiple basses...

Anywho... when listening to the soundclips and vids, remember that strings and amps/cabs play a roll in the sound as well. One bass can sound drastically different when played with different strings and through different set-ups.

I'm gonna have to disagree. I've played my SX P/J at quite loud volumes through my Peavey Mark VI and Kustom200 into an ampeg 2x15, peavey 1x15 and an acoustic 6x10 and it sounds awesome.

I have experimented with a lot of Jazz pickups in my other basses but have been very happy with the stock pickups in my SX.

Yeah, I put Seymour Duncan Antiquity IIs in my SX J bass expecting a much better tone, but I ended up selling them and leaving the stock pickups in.

How so, they sound great IME and IMO in a band context.

In my experience, they seem to lose their fullness and clarity at the same time. In their defense, I was using the stock strings.. Even though they sounded pretty good at low volume.

Oh man... now i understand where you're comming from. I'm pretty stingy when it comes to strings. I hate buying them. I hate that period of time between "brand new" and "fully worked in". blech...

BUT... My SX P/J totally came to life with an earth shattering GROWL when i replaced the stocks with some DR roundwounds! Total night and day experience. The bass sounded "good" before, but just adding the new strings made it sound "GREAT".

In fact, i could see this bass being a main gig-er as soon as i'm more comfortable with the wider P style neck(I'm use to Jazzes and the Ibby Soundgear series...).

That can definitely be attributed to the stock strings, which are horrible IMO. Put on some fresh nickel rounds, flats, steel rounds, or whatever you please.

I LOVE DR strings. I've used either Sunbeams or Nickel LowRiders on every one of my basses for the past 3 years. I have a set of d'Addario Chromes on my SX right now, because I refuse to put flats on my main basses (and because I always wanted to have something with flats on it).

I will say this, though.. My SX was a good guinea pig for spending some decent money on a Precision-type instrument. I kind of forced myself to get comfortable with the P pickup only, and that paved the way for an American Standard P5.

With a Roscoe, Elrick, and (in 10 days) a Fender P5 in the stable, the SX doesn't get much play time.. But, it's great to take to the shady gigs and places where people are smoking or asking to play my bass. Plus, I can leave it lying around the house without worrying about cats/dogs/drunk people knocking it over or messing with it.

That cat plays some mean slap, though...
