Synth Bass Subforum?

I think it deserves a separate forum, alongside Bass Guitar and Double Bass forums. It makes more sense, as Synth Bass could mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Indeed, if it was under the Bass Guitar forum, it would seem more like a synth stompbox sub-forum. I think Synth Bass should be broad enough to include keyboards (including from keys like organs), bass pedals, computer-generated stuff, and also stompbox alternatives for bass guitarists.

I would indeed encourage other musicians to come discuss - e.g. keyboardists. No harm in having some diversity :)

I think a separate area for 'synth bassists' would be useful. I don't think it would need to be its own parent forum (ie Double Bass, Electric Bass, Synth Bass). Rather, I think it would work best as a sub-forum of the electric bass side.

It seems more likely that an electric bass player will double on synth bass than an upright player. Or, conversely, more likely a synth bass player will pick up an electric bass than an upright should they need to play a 'bass' bass. Also, the electric bass sub-forums for amplification, live sound, and recording seem more applicable to synth bassists than the double bass versions of the same.

I'm all for it. After playing a Korg Microkorg XL in a shop a few weeks ago I've been GASing hard. It would be great to have a place to ask questions about synth gear, sound programming, etc. I have always loved synth sounds.

It's also another very good reason to consistently promote the use of searches...not only so the individual can avail him/herself of the rich depth of good information that exists in these here archives, instead of always trying to re-re-recreate the wheel - but also so that interesting & useful threads that somehow escape much notice upon original post will still have the chance to enjoy a productive second, third and fourth life, upon being resurrected via a search.

But I digress... :ninja:

Just bumping to add: there are some great synth-based forums out there. I particularly like VSE, but the level of activity is nothing like what it is here. Besides, those sites are dedicated to nothing but synthesizers, and as bass playing synth wizards, we have no real home. It's a problem being so multi-talented, I suppose.

I voted for the sub-forum, but where will the line be drawn? Will it include "synthy" setups, like octave-fuzz-filter, or will it only include gear that adheres to the classic definition of synthesizer; i.e., standalone synth keyboards, modules and Moog Taurus-style foot pedals? Would synth pedals with pitch-tracking oscillators count?

I think this is a great idea because there's a lot of discussions that could go here that don't really fit anywhere else. Discussions of midi control that aren't quite geared towards recording but live triggering, discussions of synth vocoders that work well as filters for bass, or synths that allow input signals to be modulated that work well, as well as a discussion space for people who double on bass/keys or bass/synth, then the main intent, discussion of bass synths and pedal synths specifically for bass.

I'd argue that any new subforum should instead be called "Keyboard Bass," to include even Stevie Wonder's work, and to avoid confusion with the legitimate use of the words "synth bass" to refer to genuine synth bass pedals like the Markbass Supersynth. Even a newbie would be able to tell that "keyboard bass" is played using a keyboard of one sort or another.

Anyone have any strong reasons to include only keyboard synths, and to rule out the Doors' use of the Piano Bass from the forum?

Hells yea there should be a synth bass forum!

The name of this place is TALK BASS .... not TALK BASS GUITAR.

Analog synth (and all of those subtopics that surround it) is seeing a Golden Age that it has never ever seen before ever in the entire history of electrically produced music. Ever. I mean when Moog decides there is enough interest in the subject to make synths and controllers aimed directly at bass sounds, there's something to it.

There may be a grey area from time to time (is it synth, or is it FX?) but what the heck, I mean let's at least see if it draws enough interest anyhow.

So where does a person go for discussions about bass pedals .. pedals used to play synths with your feet, not "stompboxess for bass guitars"?

So why not just call it "SYNTHS, KEYBOARDS, and FOOT CONTROLLERS".
