She's a good bass player, nothing earth shattering about that. It's actually a disservice to her to pretend that her gender and appearance don't have a lot to do with her notoriety

Your original question was "who else sounds like Tal?" implying that what she does is so unique that it's difficult to find another person who does what she does. My answer to that is there's a lot of people who do that all the time. Might it be that Tal is still sounding like a lot of other people and that's why you can't find someone who sounds like her?

Personally, I'm standing by what I said originally, I've yet to her anyone that sounds like her. Maybe these other players influenced her but they don't actually sound alike. Not saying she's the second coming or anything but you don't have to be to have a unique sound. It'd be like saying Hadrien Feraud sounds like Jaco, you can hear the similarities but they're still two very different players.

I'm hoping someone could point me in the direction of bassists that have the same feel, soul, style, etc as Tal. I keep listening around and coming back to her. I just don't know what it is but I really dig her vibe. It's not too much or flashy, but its not dull. She grooves it up, even her simple backing lines just feel good.

So who could I listen to to get more of that vibe? I'm also a Marcus Miller fan and that's mostly who I can think of but even he's more flashy. But I want to learn to play like Tal, so I figure (aside from listening to her) the more like her I hear the better.

I think there's a similarity in playing style to Wayman Tisdale's (RIP), but his tone is quite a bit different.

I suspect Roger does a custom contour on the upper bout of her basses. "Everything" just seems to fit perfectly.

...but she reminds me a little bit of Will Lee.

Based on that performance I can see that comparison being made. Very in the pocket yet a great sense of groove and feel.

I love her playing,
I was disappointed because I was going to see her at the Roxy but that was the day I was flying with my son to see him off for school. Felt better after saying hi to Stanley Clarke who was standing right next to me while boarding holding a gig bag.
A little off topic, since he does not remind me of Tal.

She definately finds a groove and takes off with it - I can't think of anybody that plays like her-most original bassist I've heard in a while, her work with Jeff beck alone makes her unique- the clip JGBASSIST posted is very impressive to me as well

Billy Cobham's "Stratus" is on the Ronnie Scott DVD/cd...Will Lee, at the time a member of Cobham's group, was supposed to be on the Spectrum album...how Lee Sklar ended up on the album in place of Lee is another story.

Anyway, I can hear what you're saying about Lee/Tal. Lee definitely has some (slightly-favoured) bridge pickup Jazz tone stuff goin' on...Bob Berg's solo albums, Don Grolnick's solo albums, etc.

I also hear some a Jeff Andrews, a Victor Bailey (w/ Weather Report), and an '80s Oteil Burbridge vibe in Tal's tone/playing/groove.
