You dont truly think Tal was doing that on purpose do you? Carefully placed? Tell me you are joking dude lol... It probably has nothing to do with her height and size of bass..Wear would you put your boobies. NVM lol

On a side note, Rhonda, the one you said is sexy, I was certain that was Little Richard playing the bass. :bassist:

Regardless...
Isn't it a no brainer that if someone works as much as tal wilkenfeld does, that this someone is doing something right?
My guess is that her playing and musicianship come into it, as well as a personality that makes it easy to have her on ones team.

Why there are so many threads on her is a thing I do not quite get since there are so many others the same might be said of.


Good for her!
It's nice if someone gets the responses to their work that she seems to get from so many.







and it's way too easy to judge someone else from afar.

OK...going thru my archives-
Both the Fall 1990 Bass Player & the Vol. IV/Issue 2 of Bassics have the same tale.
Lee had come to NYC (1971) to audition/replace Chuck Rainey in Dreams (a pre-Brecker Brothers ensemble with Billy Cobham).
Around '73, Lee is doing a "Spectrum" demo with Cobham, John Aebercrombie, & Jan Hammer. Lee sez he assume that meant he would be playing on the album.
So...Lee happens to go by the studio & he hears some familiar stuff goin' down...it is tracks from Spectrum with Sklar, Hammer & Tommy Bolin.
Lee asks Cobham & gets this-
"Billy later told me that my sound was not happening. I was still using my white Precision, and I had done some crazy things to it, like adding a bunch of useless pickups. From that point on, I knew the importance of ahving good-sounding equipment".

FWIW, I recall seeing that bass in a '70s Downbeat "Profiles" section that featured Will Lee...IIRC, the bass had about 10 pickups.

But you made it seem like Jeff Beck said something to the affect that no one can play with him but Tal and no other player compares. I can understand why he may not have been looking to replace Tal and not taking anything at all from Tal, Pino or Rhonda, you could probably do the Jeff Beck gig.


It's very natural when you have a member in your band that just delivers and the thought of that connection may be leaving or is no longer in the band.




And no I am not bashing Tal.

Tal and Rhonda are both fantastic bassists - but they're very different from one another style-wise. Ha - I remember Rhonda showing me that Larry Graham line twenty years ago (the one from "Pow"). I'd say Rhonda has a funkier edge than Tal but hey - she spent years playing with Prince (she also got some solid pointers early on from one of the funkiest bassists in Montreal - Orson Clarke). But Tal is a beautifully sensitive player. Can't really go wrong with either one.

Pino is a perfect example of how doing a high profile gig can put you in a position to parlay that exposure into a nice run of gig's.Remember when he became known at least in the US it was because of his work on Paul Young's records playing frettless in a pop context,then to his credit he changed his style which opened up a bunch of other opportunity's for him.

Tal is in very much the same type of cycle,she is having a good run at a early age but the idea that she's such a singular talent that she can't be replaced is laughable especially if you look at some of the people Jeff Beck has worked with,I would love to see the context that that question was asked in. I have a feeling it was a response to why he went with another Female bassist

And as far as believing what I said.. that's why I wrote it. "lol", as you say.

None of this is "Hater" talk (itself an intellectually weak, hamfisted, overused meme), strictly just post Labor Day weekend TB badinage, so don't be gettin' your blood up if I say what I think. Mutual respect all around.

With that, are you surely so certain that some little T&A "tighty-tops sans brassiere" factor wasn't at all thought into the marketing package? I'm NOT talking "playing chops" here, I'm talking strictly PR buzz. You've been around long enough to have seen that "the legendary upper horn" is what half the TBers on Tal threads mention!! (some in sorta-code, some directly) And of course it's not a BAD thing. But let's not be so NPR-PC that we have to pretend that the "bra-less mammary in the tighty-top draped o'er the portside bow" is strictly ergonomics!

Is Tal a good player? Sure! Does she sound like a lot of other good players? I'm hearing big chunks of current guys, in a way that a talented Berklee 3rd-year cat or kitten might put together.. she's got good chops, she's totally competent, can certainly hold her own. That's all a given. She took an excellent solo on Jeff's live "Cause We Ended as Lovers" (that's the one that got people talking), in my opinion her best thing in her whole career. Some other work just hasn't been nearly as interesting. I personally don't hear an original voice, I honestly can say, which more addresses the OP's inquiry... I hear some phrase-closing note choices from '80s-era Pattitucci, some patterns moving upward-chromatically in a way that Marcus has done, some harmonics chords out of Jaco's book, etc, all within her own mixture of these and other influences. I don't hear a startlingly "Original Voice", BUT the amalgam is good and competent.

And if Tal Wilkenfeld looked exactly like Rosie O'Donnell, I wonder if... well, never mind.

Now, I gotta go call Salman Rushdie for some survival tips.
