Tal Wilkenfeld, who's like her?

sorry it tweaked you. my post isn't intended as sexist, strictly an observation of the boob&horn combo as a little extra attention-getter, in addition to perfectly serviceable chops. and it's surely seemed to work, based on the posts mentioning it (in both subtle and salacious terms) in previous TW threads.
i'm not the only TBer mentioning it- it's clearly been a point of discussion at times... so, is every guy who mentioned it previously, "sexist", or as you exclaimed previously,
"an idiot dude"?

I'll assume by your response that NO woman has ever donned an outfit that deliberately accentuated her assets, before hitting the stage or a photo shoot.
but, if even one of them has, then a "sexism" argument falls apart.

and there's nothing at all wrong with looking hotter-than-everyday-life when one is in performance mode. how could there be??
all the women in my bands show up at our gigs dressed to the nines, tighter and subtly revealing in the places they choose to be, kohl eyes hypnotizing everybody who looks into them. totally hot, and in great stage-presence combination with their excellent pro chops. they all freely say it's about "accentuating the positive", looks-wise, in context.

let's not be so selectively PC or intellectually hamfisted to call the mere mention of it all "sexist".

You really should stop digging before the hole gets to deep.

One of Tal's first mentor's was Anthony Jackson and if you look at how he holds the bass, that's maybe where she got it or maybe not doesn't matter. The point is the "boob&horn" combo as you call it is not used as an attention getter . Tal's really not like that and shouldn't be lumped together with those that do.

I am no sexist. Tal is a decent player. If she was a buck tooth guy guy with pimples playing in your local band, she would be "just that guy in the band that plays nicely". She is not that. She is a kinda cute, little sister lookin' chic who is pretty decent with a pork chop. Cool. I'm over it, you should be to...

I'm honestly curious now. What current players do you consider truly incredible?

funkytown, by "to (sic) deep", you mean, like, my grave or something?
it was nice to see the TB chums climb in together to declare the discussion over. the anthony reference was of course ridiculous- it would stand to reason that Tal was wearing her instrument long before she arrived in the states to be
mentored by Mr. Jackson, Vinnie Colauita or anyone else.
the topic of sex appeal and the self-awareneness of it among some (not all) players as a poker chip is too.. what was it? "idiot dude" and "next caller"...ok, cool, no problem. let's keep it on sanctioned 4-banger turf-
"GeddyRAWKS!!" and "Hadrien got FIRED by Mclaughlin, dude!!!!! in spite of WHAT he says!!!"
PC.
safe.
and on message.

Tal is a bass player that plays bass in a very musical fashion and she has real song sensibility, if you guys even know what that is because you speak as if you do not. :smug:
But 1) musicality 2) song sensibility
There! That's it! Easy! That's why she gets the gigs and why musicians love her playing. Maybe it's because I play other instruments that this seems so obvious to me. I'm not in a "bass prison".
On top of that she has good tone and she can write. (Actual good music that you "don't need to be a bass player to" enjoy).

What is there not to like?

When Jeff Beck talked about his first meeting with Tal when she and Vinnie Colaiuta showed up at his doorstep, and they played, and he used the words "And out it came...you know; like Jaco."
He said it, and here some people react to it as if it were the most idiotic thing a person could say. Yeah, Jeff Beck doesn't know what he's talking about:rolleyes:
I'm guessing he's talking about musicality and it makes perfect sense. And the responses where people are putting up links that are supposed to show equal/greater musical content: Not even close.

Influences: Tal has said that Jaco and Anthony Jackson are her mentors.

There's been some discussion on Tal being a TB member or not, and that's why people should be more respectful.
Why the hell would Tal want to be a contributor to this site in any way shape or form?
To read about how she's nothing, or would never be where she's now, without her looks?
To read about the "boob scoop" on her Sadowsky?
I think it's really low and pathetic to write such things about anyone, and to do it about someone that actually has talent...well, it goes without saying. It's almost equals youtube comments in stupidity....just my opinion ;)

If she wasn't this reasonably hot little chick nobody would be paying much attention , she's a novelty that managed to rise to a level of playing that alot of us have , we're just not cute little girls .

That's pure speculation. The only really important question is, "can she do the job well?". As soon as that answer is taken care of everything else is just talk. Does she get some breaks cause she's a girl? Maybe. But heck, some bassists get breaks because they're black, or because they are from a certain country or culture, or because they are nice people, or because they're fun to be around, or because they have a car, or because they have good connections, or because they play the "right" kind of bass. Big deal. She does the job, just like any number of other sidemen who get the jobs you might not. Luck always place a role - being in the right place at the right time. There are plenty of excellent unknown bassists out there not getting the work but so what? That's just how things go. Tal helped make her own luck and wasn't intimidated by a lot of the sexist attitudes that permeate the business. Good for her.

Q: I like Tal's playing, who else sounds like her?

A: What?!? Tal must have mesmerized you with her boob to want to listen to her. She's not that good and a million guys are better than her. In fact, if she was a dude nobody would think anything of her playing and you're sexist for not realizing that.

TB is too funny.

This reminds me of the guy who claims he is a Navy Seal online.

Buddy, if you have managed to rise to that level of playing, you would not say such things.

Explain how she is a novelty? She plays Bass well....in fact better than you. She is working right? With some big names yea? Im trying to see the novelty you speak of...? She is good looking? So are alot of musicians, male or female. You mad she keeps better time than you while smiling and playing with Beck? I dont get your ignorance.

One thing is for sure. You are online calling someone a novelty and lumping yourself in the same caliber, online lol.

Sure is. I never heard or seen anyone talk crap about Tal Wilkenfeld outside of bass circles. Drummers? No. Guitar players? Never. Only other bass players. Or "people that own a bass" is probably more accurate.:smug: Lots of small man complex among bassists. :bassist:

I mentioned Jeff Beck in my first post singing Tal's praises. Marcus Miller is another fan. Guess the "boob scoop"-crowd thinks he's an idiot too.

She should be good, allowed to quit school at 16, fly to America and given 36 thousand bucks by her parents to spend 2 years at bass school, then with her teachers connections heads to NY to start playing with the pros.

Anyone even without a shred of natural musical talent can become a great musician with the proper training and she certainly got that and more.

Is she good, yes she is. But I am more impressed by people who taught themselves to play without fancy bass institutes holding their hand and setting up their future for them.

Chris Squire for instance, locked himself in his girlfriends apartment for 4 months because and I quote : At some point you have really got to learn your instrament :

Some greats of years ago ate dogfood and slept in a ditch on their way up but not Tal, she ate steak everynight. If she jumped on stage with Chris would he be impressed with her solos, doubt it.

Would probably be like the devil went down to Georgia, well your pretty good there son, now sit down on that chair right there and let me show you how its done. ha ha

She is good for what she does, she is good for the type of music she plays, but when she walks into a music store she won't make any of the big boys put their bass down and leave.

relax.. It's a metaphor like foot-in-mouth disease

Not that it matters but she came to the states as a guitar player and then switched to bass while she was in LA.
