I recently observed a fellow bass player that has a very thin strip of masking tape covering the 5th and 6th frets but onlywhere the E string touches the fret. He said it quiets down the clacking noise he gets when he plays their. Has anyone heard of this before? I played it for a minute and noticed it was quieter but only slightly than any other note played up and down the E. Is this a good idea or not?

I have never personally seen or heard anyone do this, but it sounds logical, aside from what it could possibly do to the tone at those frets. If he didn't want the fret buzz, he should get the bass set up right.
Naw, I tune with a tuner (albeit, a crappy one) and I get it, just the way my right hand works. If I turned the volume up, I might dig less for a minute, then I'd get excited and be to loud.
Poor technique, so what. I have fun and kinda like the klank.
oops, you mean height wise don't you. Perhaps you've got me there.
OK, so it's a crutch to cover for bad technique. How about people who use a hair scrunchy to make up for the fact that their muting technique isn't good enough to let them play 6 and 7 string basses without such artificial muting tricks?

I suppose what ever gets the job done, is OK. I just personally find it a lot easier to use good technique.

i used to set my strings so high, you could run your finger under them, and not touch the frets....(well almost). but now, ( 3 decades later) i like that clack. it seem to be less annoyance, and more of a signature. CLACK CLACK, BOYS!
Is clank when simply pressing the string down without even plucking it causing the clank the string seemingly rattling against the fret as it is pressed?
Clank is when you pluck too hard and the string bounces off the frets making a real ugly metallic "clank" noise.
1) Check your EQ, too many hi-mids or treble can cause that
2) Check your technique, this is the most common thing for clank, people who play too hard.
3) Check your setup. Maybe you need your strings a little higher?

I play with high action to eleminate clank. I play with a pick and a lot of fast downstrokes. Low Action = Lots of clank. High Action = No clank.
