TapeWound Club~Anyone?

Well, got the GHS tapewounds in. Want to do a demo/comparison between them and the GHS Precisions.

I'm having a bit of difficulty deciding which bass to test drive these on. Both Sweet Georgia Brown (my kit P-bass) and Veronica (my Squier VM 70s Jazz) sport the flats. The Squier is pretty much a set-and-forget kind of instrument (minus the occasional truss rod adjustment). The kit bass is a bit fiddly. Right now, with the drastic change in seasons up here has necessitated some intervention, but both are playing pretty well right now (with good action, intonation, etc...)

So, which one should I do? I get the nylons will look pretty cool on the maple fretboard, but you know, P-bass.

I run black tapes on two ABG's and have never felt a need to look for something else. They will certainly squelch the stock bronze finger noise. I don't know how well they stand up to frets though. Maybe some one can comment on tapes/frets longevity.

Thanks MD. That encourages me to try the whites on the ABG. The whites have been on the jazz for about a year and I had it for 3 yrs. There is little discernible wear on either the frets or the tapes.

I have a set of D'Addario Tapewounds on my fretless Cirrus. I've never used tapewound strings before, and from having a strong dislike of flatwound strings, I was hesitant to try them believing that I'd have the same opinion of them. But I have to say, I am LOVING these, to me they have much better note articulation and brighter tone than flats.

That's great. I went from flats to the Nylons. The newer Nylons are a lot better than the ones out in 1970.

More good information there too, thanks. Beautiful 5 string, Carvin? It seems likely the modern tapes are better technology. Because of this discussion the question for me has moved from: will I try the LB tapes on the abg when I take them off the jazz, to; how soon can I move them to see if they improve the abg! The EB flat slinkys I ordered for the jazz are sitting in the wings, but there is a jam coming up so maybe I will change over now to get used to them. Nice problems to have.

Not responding to anything in particular here, just felt like saying, since it's sitting right next to me, I've had the same D'Addario medium tapes on my P bass for about a year or more and although I've taken them off a couple times to do some string-swapping, I love these strings on this bass. I don't care for them as much on my other basses, but on the P, they're the ones. I probably aught to keep them on before they start to unwind, especially after the time it's taken them to get to where they are, tonewise.

On my AGB i am using Pyramid tape wounds (actually "filament" wounds, i.e. a bit different from other tapewounds). Well, after a 2 or 3 years now it can be seen and possibly also heard that they wear (they are becoming brighter). But the do not wear at the frets, they wear on the right hand side from fingering.

Other brands, notably Daddarios, are constructed differently. I expect mine to last longer.

BTW: i am really disappointed by LaBella (and that's a polite wording): i have ordered White Tapes in shortscale from them through a German vendor and cancelled the order after 9 months of waiting. Afterwards i ordered them through Basstrings Online - and again, no reaction over months. Apparantly this strings are vapourware.

I am really short of cancelling that order too and buying GHS pressure wounds instead.

I would say, you were more than patient waiting for the strings you ordered.

I have some copper whites on order and have had a sneaking suspicion that they may take a long time for me to get. Can't imagine why LaBella offers strings that they can't seem to deliver. Where I ordered them from can't seem to give me any sort of time estimate at all.

Thats interesting. My local shop told me that they were not allowed to get them in Australia where I am. I asked someone in the industry who were able to get them from a rep of another US guitar/strings co. quite quickly within weeks anyway. I love them but as I said earlier, I suspect they are giving me muddy mids. Going to try slinkys next.
