TapeWound Club~Anyone?

I have Labella White Tapewounds on my "G-bass" (extra-short-scale bass tuned up to G).
They sit just right on it with the relatively high tension, and the resulting super low playing action makes this bass "acres of fun". They are coming up on three years old, and sound and look exactly as they did the day I put them on!

Sounds great __ EXCEPT __ for the complete lack of string ground (that slight buzz drives me nuts).
But I now have an EMG MMCS on the way, which should solve that pretty nicely :)

(Color is off due to yellow lighting in the hallway, this bass is actually more on the Seafoam side of Mint Green)

I have a similar 'lack-of-string-ground' issue with a new-to-me wishbass, which has a completely non-metallic bridge! EMG transplant is pending for that one, too...

2 questions...

High tension... Is it because you tuned up so high?

And buzz from lack of string ground?

yes, and yes.

Tension isn't "CRAZY" high ( can still bend strings a little - a semi-tone, anyway ) but certainly VERY high, as you'd expect for being three semitones over 'concert' pitch!

The electrical buzz is very slight (humbucking pickup and all) but I'm quite fanatical about eliminating that ( it's the friggin' TWENTY FIRST CENTURY, after all...)

If I reach over and touch the jack, or rest my hand on the bridgeplate then its totally silent... and SILENCE is what I want to hear out of every bass! (between notes) :D

I use the D'Addario tapewounds on my main bass, a modded Ibanez Portamento five string fretless. Over the years I've primarily played Thomastik Jazz Flats, but I tried these tapes on the recommendation of a friend who is a D'Addario endorser, and I'm loving them.

Nice. I was going to try those on a fretless. Are you using this size set?

Any issues with grounding buzz?

Just ordered a set of those myself- my first actual tapes! I was torn between a few kinds but once I ruled out Rotos (too thick) it all came down to silk color...

Chicory, have you got a link handy to that track you posted that featured you backing the UK frontman?
Wanted to hear it on better speakers as I enjoyed it quite a bit on my phone - reminded my of 70's pub rock,
but in a good way... Nice to see ya and thanks in advance

This one, where I floundered about behind a piano, asked to be removed from the track, and then ended up on a Gaelic radio station?
