Those were my thoughts, exactly! That might be too slippery.
Funny enough, got some new song ideas I laid down after I put those La Bella's on..: it's titled "slippery".
Hi people,
I was on the point of ordering some tapes for my Delux Jazz 5 - saw this thread and thought I'd gather any more morsels of info and did - I keep reading posts saying Low Tension, much less tension ect ect.
This concerns me a little as that 34" B is soft enough already to have a different touch and feel.
Could anyone give me an idea of what is being compared to what - I'd like a bit more tension on that B if anything!

Well @RandM, out of the 2 Tapewound sets I've tried (D'Addario Black tapes and La Bella White tapes) both are fairly low tension sets compared to the D'Addario XL rounds that I use. I bit floppy for me, but I just change up my technique for a lighter touch and crank the amp up more. I've found it allows for more dynamics but is a massive exercise in control. I'm sure others can chime in about their strings of choice.
Thanks for the reply - that's one of the things I'm doing already more so on the B : ) Bit puzzled by it, if they're a round wound with Nylon tape wrap why are they lower tension?

I have D'addario and 3 types of La Bella and I prefer the light La Bella's. The flavor of underlying string just controls the tone to some degree. They are low tension, but that is one of the things I like. I did have to learn not to bend the G down too far, up is go for it as far as you like, but other than that, the tension change has been wonderful coming from the typical high tension flat world.
Fwiw,i used to own a Carvin AC50 5-string. When i bought it,it had a set of Rotosound tru bass tapes on it. They were a bit too big,stiff,and tension-y for my taste,and i replaced them with the lower gauge Labella white tapewounds.(which were a totally different sound from the black tapes as well.)
So maybe the rotos would work for you.
I'm pretty sure they have a round core instead of a hex core... I know at least that's makes them more plyable. Maybe @SLaPiNFuNK can shed some light?
Heh heh - I do understand about the Hex/Round core thing, and I'm learning heaps more since jumping aboard this boat - what a great resourse of know it is - I'm just a bit surprised hearing that they're lower tension than normal roundwounds, I hadn't seen that mentioned before.

If you're diggin rounds, you could try a heavier gauge. Now I'm curious, what are you playin on right now?

I had a break to play house husband while my wife did a full time course (ceramics)
They're about 3yrs old and I can't quite remember! Best bet would be DR Hi Beams
I was doing C/R back then - for now I have an Acoustic/Elec slide blues player asking me to play with him, thus my "a bit more
thump but not full ickey thump thought"
If it helps I have a Jazz Dlxe 5 through an
Eden WT550>212XLD>210XST, and with that smooth Eden low end I thought Tapes
might be sweet spot.

Ickey Thump>Big Thump (Anglo/Aust slang) I'm a Motobicyclist - a thump hurts but doesn't actually break much.

Well, I strung my fretless P with fender 9120's and I have to say, I don't like them. Too clicky and plasticy sounding. And being rounds, kind of harsh on the fingers. I loved the previous version, nice and smooth with no buzz. I guess I will look at another brand.
