TARA Labs cable challenge!!

I have nothing against Long - I've talked on the phone with him, and bought gear from him in the past - he's a great and trustworthy person. However, there are a number of other discussion forums that I participate in, and they all have rules and guidelines about the level at which any dealer is allowed to participate. That's something that's missing here at TalkBass. There are a number of dealers that subtly promote their products here, and it shouldn't be allowed. Again, they are all great guys, but they use this forum for a business advantage.

I'm all in favor of the intent of these tests, but I think it should be done with randomly-chosen cords whose names are kept secret. It would still answer the big question, without promoting one company's product.

Well, I think this is a different case. If I post about how much I love my MTD bass, it is too in fact favorable advertising isn't it? Harmony central is FULL of user reviews, which are nothing more, or less than what we are doing here. As a matter fact, I have been chosen to test and review firewire strings for talkbass, as soon as those arrive, I will be doing so. None of us are getting a thing out of this, if the results are favorable, more power to them. If they make no difference, do you think this is going to be positive advertising?

I personally see no problem with this, all of the products are being returned to the manufacter after the test is done. If you read deeper into this and see a problem, I reccomend you contact Paul on the matter. I like bass, I like gear, and I like this site, I'd review and return any gear somone wanted reviewed.

Also, this was my idea, not theirs.

Tim

I want to add that I am NOT implying that Long Ly is improperly promoting his product here. Someone else started the thread about Tara Labs, and while Long has participated, I don't think he has done anything underhanded. I just think it's unfair to other manufacturers or dealers to focus on one product; just as it could have undesirable consequences for Tara Labs if the results are not positive.

I don't think it's a question about Tara Labs power cords, but about expensive after-market power cords in general.

Thanks,
JD

Long only jumped in to defend himself and tha's fair enough.

But if this test has undesirable consequences for Tara, that's the risk you take by putting your money where your mouth is. Consider the flip side. If this test proves that Tara's claims are true, imagine the extra business it will generate for them.

Since the claims made by a TB member were challenged on the forums, why shouldn't they be resolved here?

I will say this about Long Ly; he believes in his product enough to come here, and defend his product. I personally think that either Tara Labs will not allow the test to take place or Tara Labs claims will crash and burn.

I look forward to the results of Tims tests but I would still like to see the results of a purely scientific test such as Bob proposes.

I don't quite see the need for an entourage of Tara Labs emplyees to be present at QSC for the tests. Seems that a cable could be sent to QSC at the same time for simultaneous testing.

As a matter of fact, Tim, why don't you allow Bob to be one of the testers for your project?

I personally would like to see some of the claims that are put forth by Tara, Monster and some of the other manufacturers of boutique signal and speaker cables put to the test. May as well clear the air once and for all.

I'm sure most of you happened upon the thread in amps, concerning the TARA labs power cables, and their abilities. If not, the thread is located here.

I, like am sure many others, would of liked to see some conclusion on these claims, so I have sent a PM with a "test challenge". I will await their reply, and post updates on the test, subject to their approval. Feel free to discuss this, but I will be watching this thread closely.

Here is a copy of the PM "challenge"

The cable challenge
Hi, first off, let me introduce myself, I am Tim Cole, gigging bassist, talkbass member, and moderator of the recording gear forum. I consider myself a knowledgeable, and respected member of the forums. I'd also like to mention that I am sending this PM to both the cable guy, and prockenclang. I have read all 9 pages of the thread in amps on your cables, and I will admit, I too am a bit skeptical, yet open minded. It is sad that this thread went so far without any concrete evidence either way on the subject, therefore the point of this PM.

What I propose is an "on the road" test, at the end of which, your supplied materials will be returned to you, and I will personally guarantee their safe return. If you would like to send me one of the cables, I will evaluate it, and also pick 5-10 other respected members to forward the product to, once my testing is done. If you approve this idea, I will contact the moderator of the amps forum, and ask him to sticky a post for me at the top of his forum, with an announcement of the testing being done. I will then make a thread in my forum (recording gear), giving updates on it's travel, and thoughts along the way. I'd like to have this in my forum, as I would be willing to do the moderating this thread apparently needs, and don't want to burden others that don't want to deal with it. In the end, I will write a collective review to be published on talkbass, complete with user comments, and average ratings in several categories.

This is a good opportunity for you to prove to the nay-sayers that you do indeed sell a quality product, and can stand behind your claims. I look forward to working with you, and hope that you find this opportunity to be "your big break".

If I do see a significant difference in the cable, I will commit to buying one myself, as I am sure others will follow. Please contact me ASAP, so I can get you my address out to get this dog underway.

Tim Cole

Tim: There is a point in this post that is not quite clear to me.

Did you send the challenging PM to Long Ly or to Tara Labs?

I would be very interested in actually reading both sides of the correspondence that has led up to this point.

Thanks for your work on this project.

Let's just say for now, I feel I am putting together a quite impressive tester list that should definitely be pleasing to both sides of this debate. I'll post the list as soon as I get confirmation the package is on it's way, and design a road map, and schedule for the "cable tour 2003/2004". I think at this point, each tester will have a little different testing criteria than the others, it should be interesting, and most of all informative.

I sent emails to both prockenklang, and Long Ly. I'm not sure if it would be cool to post their messages in full to me on here without their permission, but I will say that they are very excited about the tests as well, and have no bones about how anyone analyzes them. To this point, they couldn't possibly be cooler with it.

No matter what you say, NO ONE HERE WILL BELIEVE YOU!

Wrong, we believe that you perceived it that way, but nobody can be blamed for being sceptical, especially those who are engineers.

The audio world is full of quacks and snake oil-salesmen, so it's just reasonable.

Nearly the same testimonial was posted by another first time poster in the other thread. ;)

I wonder why, with these claims of drastic improvements and changes in sound, there is ZERO EMPIRICAL PROOF offered by the manufacturer and its proponenents? No, actually, I know why.

Welcome to TB Billy!

Guys, since the guys have accepted us to test their product, I see no need in more contorversy before then. Let's just let the testers do the talking! While I am honestly not expecting a difference, I will be the first to admit if there is. Long informed me that something should be on it's way this new week, I'll definitely let you guys know when it comes!

Tim:

I would love a mini TB get together! In fact, I believe that I had discussed this once in the past with Cheesewiz. As you might guess, I am pretty booked through the holidays, but January is pretty open. I have a variety of heads, rack gear, and cabs, so we could really have some fun!

Send me a PM when you two have some dates available.

Tom.

Found this in one of the articles:

Part of the difficulty is that there are still unexplained acoustic phenomena. William Morris Hartmann, a professor of physics at Michigan State University in East Lansing, works on psycho-acoustic projects, which investigate the way sound is perceived, rather than the way it is produced.

There are examples, he said, of sounds that measure beyond the range of human hearing, and yet some people seem to perceive them. That means the market is left open to wild claims and psuedoscience. "It's annoying, but it's hard to disprove," Professor Hartmann said.
