Pretty sure the top cracked when drilling for a 3rd switch. The plate is the fix. It doesn't look bad, but a walnut plate would certainly blend better. That or a complementary wood in a gloss, or maybe even a jazz bass plate (standard or made of something like maple?).

I’ve been using this bass at rehearsals for a R&B group I joined.
An unsolicited compliment came from one of the guitarist on how nice the bass sounded.
I’m playing in mono for the rehearsals. But will use the stereo amp for gigs.

It has been a dark devastating journey, I have emerged damaged but whole. Will return with fervor presently.
Sweet Treets shall return once I can repair the damage to my shop and soul.
I’m going to play this bass at a gig on the 31st. First time it will be used in front of people.

I’m not sure what cover it is…I’m just the bass player….

Glad that it is serving you well. It was a tough nut to crack with all of the subtle (and not so subtle) features on this body. I'm also thrilled that the Freestone neck worked out so well for you. I recently assembled a parts jazz with a Freestone neck and I Love it.
