Taylor AB-1 Mic’d Up

yeah man, nice track and mix

both nice mics. Ive found micing ABG with a single large LDC is going to give the best overall representation of the instrument. You might want to go with a single cardioid LDC, close mic'd about 8-16" off the soundboard, slightly off axis to help focus your sound AND avoid bleed from rest of band (which is going to happen no matter what), so the band dynamic is going to have to be balanced from the get go. You'll need to use just enough gain to capture your instrument and avoid too much noise floor/room/bleed.

If you really want to have a 'wider stereo image' (solo or duo performance), than definitely a matched pair of mics in an X/Y setup might be nice. You could use different mics to capture 'neck' and 'body' sound like in an A/B setup, but overall in live-sound/FOH/"in a band mix'—keep it simple with a single close mic. (If you need more presence, then a pickup might be needed.)

Transducers can work (K&K or the like) but they also come with some caveats/likes-dislikes for onstage settings. Ive used mic and bridge pickup blending on my DBs, but it's just not the same a single mic. And a preamp/amp for blending the sounds will go a long way to satisfy your needs.

Other than a single LDC mic, everything else is dependent on the setup/situation; band size/instrumentation, room size, amp or FOH or both. Post some details for us.

RE String options:

Ive been through ALOT of brands and types for my ABGs. It really comes down to "what 'sound' and feel do you like and want from your instrument". Post some details including: what strings are you using, what you currently DON'T like about those strings, and what sound/feel are you looking for on the ABG, maybe I can offer some options.

PS> search TB for "ABG" Ive posted a bunch of string demos
hope that helps

Hey thanks for your replies. I definitely wanna try mic’ing this thing up live on a combo gig…just gotta find the right one and bring a backup in case it doesn’t work out well.

Regarding strings, I’m a flats guy most of the time, mostly using LaBella’s. I wanted to put some on, but was concerned about tension (see next post), so I messaged customer service to ask for some advice. They thought the break angle at the saddle would be too sharp, and that it would likely break the core of the string.

They recommended tapewounds, which I’ve used in the past on a lakland hb. It’s been a minute, but I remember getting a lot of ticking/clicking string noise from the strings actually hitting the frets, so I switched back to flats.

So I wouldn’t be opposed to trying tapes on this, but I just wanna steer away from those trebly clicking noises as much as possible. If it’s that or the string noise of bronze rounds though…I’ll do the tapes.

Re: the tension, I’ve noticed this bass drops a good 15% in actual volume when these current strings are tuned up to A440. If I loosen them just a few cents, not even a half step, the top moves a lot more free, and the bass is noticeably louder. This makes me wanna take some tension measurements and make sure whatever strings i use next aren’t going to increase tension on the top. Seems it’s choking it out a little.

Mics:
I would imagine there wont be much difference with similar LDC mics live, but you may find one 'rejects feedback' better than another. Trying a SDC might be better for feedback rejection, but you might lose 'some fullness' and capture more mids—which might help or hinder depending on setup and FOH. Try to include HPF/LPFs to help eliminate sub-freq and top-end noise [70~100hz to 5~8khz]

Welcome to the ABG string rabbit hole:
YEs exactly. stiffer strings will act like a mute and dampen the top vibrations. So 'action and setup' preferences/ideals must be considered along the way.

Something to consider, IF you're playing small combo with "tune-able instruments", theres no LAW that says you have to tune to 440. If your combo is say ABG, vocal, and violin; tune to a pitch that works for the instrument(s). (obviously a group decision)

The main issue with EB string sets on ABG is not that the strings might damage the bass, but that their tension is above a bass' resonant "sweetspot". Each bass will be different. Heres some links with a few different Flat sets on the same bass:

Here are several clips demo-ing some different flats on the Balor. The idea around these demos is to hear each set unprocessed with no plugins, dry signal or acoustic only in order to compare each set. While not perfectly scientific, it's a general way of comparing sets. Headphones recommend...

Also core, wrap material, and wrap type play a big role. RW will have more mids and top end, AND the corpus will exaggerate that top end and string noise AND body noise on stage. Flats will have less noise, but may also choke the top. (for example, 'lighter' flat sets like LaB 750s can open up the top and still tune to 440)

The 'quick answer' from many is "use dark flats", but that doesn't necessarily allow a specific bass to fully resonant, chokes the top, or decreases sustain which may or may not be your goal. Heres trying 3 different versions of the same string, as well as downtuned set to find the best feel; often Eb or D tuning if using EB sets on ABG for me.

So lots of moving parts to get to a sound and playing feel you want within the:
"Short/thick/Upright-type sound" <—> "Brighter/Bell-like/guitar-type sound"

List of variables to consider (dark<—>bright): *my preference, YMMV
Wrap type (ie Flats, Pressurewound, Sanded, Rounds)
Core (Hex, Round, Nylon, Silk, Braided)
Wrap material (Tape, Nickel, Gold, Copper, BronzePhos, SS)
Set Tension (Heavy, Light)
