TB customs - reaching beyond the FAQs

When you go on a date, do you ask the woman "tell me everything about your personality?" And expect to get an honest answer?

No.

Best way to learn this site is to participate. It's like most....just better moderated. It's also full of some very knowledge people about gear, music, and band management.

... and humor, Guy... don't forget the humor... .

Going back a couple of decades to when I was dating/searching, I'd walk up to a lady or group of ladies in a club with my opening line, "May I sit down?" That worked about 100% of the time. From there, it was sort of an interview process. Like the band? What school? Play volleyball? Got a bike? Like motorcycles? And so on with the intent to find common ground. Getting a woman (or dude) to talk about her favorite subject (themselves) is usually easy. Things are a little different with the technology but people are pretty much the same as then.

So you're correct in that I'm only scratching the surface but I am scratching and will eventually get to the proverbial bone. As incognito as you are, it's still a no-brainer to see 11,000 plus posts, Nashville resident etc. without much effort. I'd ask you about your Precision but that seems a bit too presumptuous at this time.

I will definitely jump into the off-topic pool when I get home from work. Work. Crud, I play connect the dots and put puzzles together all day. Printed Circuit Board design is a well paying game. If you remember my original avatar, my shirt was a mess of diagonal lines. It reminded me of the so-called rat's nest that I start every design with so I had to have it. I've worn it on gigs too, complete with the skinny tie. More often it's a Sublime or Stones t-shirt though. So, tell me about that P. :)

I see only a few avatars like mine where it's a user's actual picture.

Mine is on my hard drive, so I reckon it's one of my actual pictures. It's also what I see reflected when I look at my TV screen, so it has to be real, right?

One thing TB has done for me in a material sense is to start me down the stomp box path.

Make absolutely CERTAIN that you have and keep the original cardboard boxes the pedals came in. Somebody somewhere on here wrote that unwritten rule. Or something. I could be confused about the details (as I frequently am).

-You must love Fender to be a proper bass player
-You must hate Fender to be a proper bass player- you know, old things are passe and cannot be good now a days
-You must have a P-Bass or Jazz Bass if you want to record. Nothing was ever recorded on anything else, and engineers will tell you so
-You must only have 4 strings - because, well, Jaco
-Your band must have a band leader, otherwise, you are herding cats. Musicians can never make a democracy band work (this is not political)

</sarcasm>

-Welcome OP - you'll find a wealth of awesome musicians on this board as well as a wealth of knowledge. That knowledge can be misleading as a lot has to do with personal preference. So, ask, read, listen, research, rinse, repeat. I'm sure you'll find everything you need to help you along you Low-End Journey.

PS - my avatar is a pic of me

To be honest, given that so many thousands of new users have joined the site and so many older users have left, much of the inherent personality and sense of community that used to be here has left this site. Back in the day you could recognize every username in a thread and know quite a bit about who each person was. The humor was a bit more personal as well.

What's left is a megaforum that is more civil than average with a small group of megausers everyone recognizes and respects and a few tired old jokes that are slung around in every thread.

Not sayin' that's a bad thing, it just is. Natural consequence of the site growing larger. This is still a nice place, which is why I keep coming back.

One thing to note: try not to bad-mouth certain types of gear, chances are there's a cult following of it somewhere on Talkbass that'll be more than willing to derail any thread to present their case.

The same goes for any type of music genre: it's always funny to watch some poor soul post a video of a gore-grind or slam-death metal song talking crap on it, only to have dozens of us metal heads come out of nowhere and post endless youtube links to our favorite and most ear splitting tracks.

Welcome, and enjoy your stay

So you need to read this thread: the "P" in P-bass stands for "PCB" of course - custom pickguard build

Carrots was the default option in the old forum software when you had a poll, so anyone in the know will include a carrot related option in any TB poll.

Various swear words are autocorrected to "less offensive" versions by the forum software, and if you write the usual word for saliva dribbling out of your mouth you get drool, not a word. If you get too creative in trying to express yourself in ways that are not as family-friendly as the place strives to be, you may get personal attention from the moderators - it's not hard to avoid that by simply remembering to play nicely, and using the ignore function if someone makes you want to use that sort of expression.

That is really neat. I counted 12 memory chips on the board before the shaping was done. The fly-by routing isn't used anymore. Tuning (length matching) the memory bus is where I get to show off my mad skills. I've been doing this since '88. Obviously a slacker; this is all I want to do as a day job. I keep saying no to management positions. Sitting in meetings would be harder in my opinion.
