TC Electronic BG250 Club (Part 2)

Have only owned two bass amps in my life (a 6G6B Bassman and a Musicmaster Bass Amp) both of which really work better as guitar amps. So you might say this will be my first, dedicated, bass amp. I've been getting by up til now practicing through the Musicmaster, but its flat, one-dimensional sound is pretty uninspiring. The 6G6B I sold years ago (a regrettable move...ah, well).

So, with Columbus Day sales, these are as low as $255 again. If I decide to switch up, I might be hard pressed to get $175 for mine...ah, I guess that's just the way things go. I'll have to wait until the sales are over so I'm competing with the $299 price.

I think it can do a vintage vibe very well. It can be very articulate for a 1X15, too. The EQ is quite flexible & responsive, so you can get a good variety of tones. You can get mid accentuation or a huge, bassy, muddy swamp... whatev. I like to go for a vintage but not too muddy tone, and I feel it nails it. Sort of a B-15 meets SVT kind of tone. I also often run my bass through a SansAmp VT Bass pedal, which is a great tone enhancer. Anyway, if you like warm, vintage sounds, I think this will do the trick for you just fine.

The BG 250 has been among the products excluded from at least some of the big, online seller's recent sales. The reason given to me was that they were already discounted by recent price reductions. That's why I waited til they dropped from $349 to $299 (advertised price). So that may be the price you'll be up against if you go to sell yours.

TC is a Danish company, unless I'm mistaken. Some European companies are very strict about not allowing U.S. retailers to discount their products. I know that's particularly true of a couple of German power tool manufacturers.

The new versions that are showing up on EBay are quite spendy, at least so far.

Yeah. The pricing is going to be interesting. My contact had demo units, but no final pricing yet. It seems a bit confused. Someone from TCE posted in the other thread that US price would be $499. I wouldn't think that anyone from TCE would comment on anything other than MSRP, which would likely put MAP at $349. That's not looking like it's going to be the case.

If the 208 has MAP higher than the other models, I really don't think they'll do very well. Just get a BH250 and a cabinet.

Just received my (original version) BG 250 from the BBT (Big Brown Truck) this afternoon.

Hellig Dunk! I'm likin' this! I've been limping along, practicing through my old, 6V6, Fender Musicmaster Bass Amp up til now, so you can see how I might feel like giant wax plugs had just been removed from my auditory canals as soon as I plugged into this thing.

The surprise to me is that, at least so far, I'm diggin' the tube drive more than the Tone Prints. Was expecting just the opposite response.

Oh well, what do I know? I'm just a bass newbie who needs to focus on basics rather than getting side-tracked by special effects. There'll be plenty of time to play with that stuff after I've whipped my timing and chops into some reasonable facsimile of competence.

But it sure is nice to feel like I'm no longer playing through a Dixie Cup mounted in a cardboard box...

This is probably old news to most of you - but just want to verify if any are curious: I always wondered if setting the DI to pre EQ bypasses the Tubedrive and Tonepriint as well as the tone controls - I just verified today that it does. So if you want your Tubedrive and/or Toneprint sound going to the FOH PA you need to set it to Post EQ.

I'm also looking into the BG250 to use for practice and home and band rehearsals. I really like the Ampeg sound and am a huge Queens of the Stone Age fan, but to me it sounds like the BG250 comes really close to that Ampeg sound and it's just so much cheaper than something like a Micro VR or PF350 stack and so much lighter than a BA115.

Because the MKI is about a hundred euros less than the new 115, would it just be best to get that one? If I can't use both TonePrints at the same time, that kind of seems to defeat the purpose of getting the more expensive new version. Or is anything else different?

No. You can't use both TonePrints at the same time. If you click one on, the other one clicks off.

The point would seem to be quicker access to two TonePrints, with separate mix controls.

For those who like and have become accustomed to running TubeDrive plus a TonePrint, this is a step backwards.

There's the remote possibility that a firmware update could change this, but I seriously doubt it. It would seem that accounting for the processing path and stacking effects is a pretty base level thing...if it not there now, I'd operate on the assumption that it's not going to be later.

I'd be a little upset about this too... except that I use a SansAmp VT Bass for my tube emulation! But the TubeDrive is very good, and I think this is a bit of an unfortunate back-step.

Hey all. I'm out of town next week but I'm thinking I'll order one of these when I get back. We'll be into Nov by then and I'll order from MF or GC or whatever and get a 30 day price guarantee which should cover me for the holiday sale, right? So post-turkey day, I contact them and ask them to match their big sale price? The old model is the one I'm interested in. Tubetone plus compressor sounds like a great combination to me.

Anyone buy the extended warranty? I've read this entire thread (both parts) and know there have been a few troubles that generally pop up early. I suppose the amp hasn't been around long enough to know how long it'll last in the long run. Just thinking out loud I guess.

P bass w/flats, alt country, I always DI into our band PA with sub, which we take everywhere. (we figure if we're going to set up we might as well sound good) Can't wait to see what kind of sounds I can get out of a nice bass amp.

Sweetwater gives a 2 years warranty for free....

Be careful waiting. If you wait too long, they might pull all the new old versions...

FWIW, I play a P/J5 w/Flats, often DI'd to FOH and it sounds great with this amp!

That was my thinking when I saw that the line was being expanded. Either that, or that the 1 X 15" price would jump back up once current, in-store/warehouse inventory was gone. So I snagged the old version from MF for $299 a couple weeks ago. Sweetwater had already stopped listing them at that time. As of a couple minutes ago, MF is still offering them at that price.

What's being designated as the TC BG250 "115 MK2" or "115 MKII" appears to be showing up in Continental Europe and the UK at about £345 (£1.00=$.62 US) so it would appear that the 1 X 15" model may, indeed, be bumping up appreciably in price when stocks of the "original version" are gone. Looks like the 110 model will be a bit lower at £299.

Just a heads up to those still "on the fence"...
