TC Electronic Pedals

Hey,

I have been looking at the TC Electronic pedal range.

There are 5 that I was looking at

• Corona Chorus
• Vortex Flanger
• Flashback Delay
• Hall of Fame Reverb
• Shaker Vibrato

A few things:

From watching YouTube demo videos I have discovered that I don't think I would ever use Vibrato or Delay.

I'm pretty sure I would use reverb and chorus.

I wasn't sure about flanger.

From what I have read, the point of a bass line is to hold the low end and not use effects like delay and vibrato which can confuse the listener.

It is worth getting the flanger, vibrator and delay pedals? Do you think it is worth getting the reverb and chorus?

You could get a multi-effect like a Zoom B3, have hours of fun trying out the various effects, and then buy pedals of the ones you like.

But, the TC Electronic pedals have a toneprint feature. This allows you to upload custom presets from one big database.

True - but you can only upload the chorus patches to the chorus pedal, delay patches to the delay pedal etc. There is not a Multi-TonePrint pedal that will give you access to all the different patches. Cunning marketing, me thinks, 'cos it would be possible. (I think.)

I think you are maybe approaching your pedal purchases from the wrong direction - "what can this pedal be used for?". Look at it from "what music do I want to make?", listen to examples and figure out how it was done, and then get the equipment that makes the sounds you need. People use any and all effects under the sun for their brand of art so in some sense they are all useful, but whether it's relevant to your taste in music only you can tell.

Not that I haven't many times done the same, it's just that that way lies a credit card debt and a shelf full of pedals you didn't really need.

Focusing on one brand is maybe also not the best way, I mean you may well end up with a TC pedal, I have a few and they are fine, but I'd rather first decide if I want a certain effect type (chorus for instance) and then compare many products and many reviews in that effect category to see if there's another brand that has a pedal I like better.

Hey Patrick, I don't know how long you have been playing but I guess you are just starting to get into your first bands, right? In your position at such an early stage in your musical life I would advise a cost-effective multi, say a Zoom B1-on, and try out all of the effects there. Once you have worked out what you like and what you don't, then go find stand-alone versions of the effects that best work for you. Thinking about the brand/range is the wrong approach - the pedal should be a tool you use to achieve a sound, not something that enslaves you and dictates your sound.

Delay can actually be a great effect for bass. Ever heard of bands like Tool or Primus? I like reverb but I think delay is more usable than reverb on bass. The corona chorus seems pretty popular but I haven't tried it yet. I know the bassist for mastodon uses it. But yeah for me the flashback would be my first pick my second would either be the hof or shaker. They also make mini versions which cut down the costs and size a bit but with some pedals particularly the delay you lose some functionality that bigger ones have.

Maybe not if your in a southern rock gig but for some styles delay is a great effect here's an example

I think it can be quite close minded to think like that, it could really impede creativity if allowed. I use delay, trem and a host of other effects all the time in my band and it works out great. It all depends on the type of band you're in and what type of music you play IMO. If you're in a straight blues or rock band you could get away with little to no effects. There are no rules. You can use and not use what you want. Just don't ever let anyone tell you, "theres no delay for bass". As soon as you start believing that, a part of your mind and inspiration closes off. IMO.

Another thing about tc is that you can only load one toneprint at one time. That said, they sound really good IMO and aren't too expensive.

But you still sound uncertain, so I'd second the multi effects suggestion. Until you really know what you want.

Oh, and you could try the source audio stuff with low-retain: it blends in just the treble component of the flanger sound while keeping your bass lows. And you can share presets over the internet if you have the source audio hub.

True but with a Zoom B3 you can download free effects patches others have created right here on TB. You can also have hours of fun designing and tweaking your patches in the Edit and Share software that comes with it.

Definitely get a multi pedal. That's what I did. I figured out which effects I liked, spent hours digging through these here forums and youtube vids and started grabbing single pedals (thanks to tax return and great trades through my local shop). Still missing some, but my board is usable as it is for what I do.

I wondered about that. It would be cool if you could mix them up a little. But from a sales and marketing view, what you said makes sense.

Being able to choose whatever Toneprint you like from any effect type would be great.
Even better, a "blank slate" Toneprint pedal with maybe three-five slots.

It will probably never happen, but you can always dream.

It's obviously possible for TC to do multi effects in one unit. I have a BG250 head and it can take a variety of the Tone Prints including many used in the pedals. They are still only one at a time. Would be nice to do them in combination!
