TC Electronics RebelHead 450 - Rebel with a Cause

into Berg cabinets?
I bought the combo about 2 weeks ago, including the 2x10 and 2x12 cabinets. In all honesty, I'm having some challenges in getting a clear bright tone out of this rig. Dark, rich tone, no problem, but bright clear tone, well, it's just not happening.
I connected with my retailer and he has suggested that I return the cabinets (I'm keeping the head!) and load up on Berg cabinets.
So, firstly, has anone run this head with Bergs?
Secondly, what cabinets would you recommend I check out... bearing in mind that one of the things that drew me toward the TC stuff was the portability.

You just need to adjust your EQ frequency bands to custom freguencies. Especially the highest band. Get somewhere where you can have an half an hour in a room where you can turn your amp and cabs up loud and adjust the bands and turn up the highs and adjust the bands until you get what you need. EQ adjustment is there for a reason and when you hear the story's of what is done in the course of mixing records(for the last 50 years) you realize that extremes of EQ are used all the time to make things sound good on hit records. Do what you need to make it sound good. If it sounds good it is good no matter how you need to tweak it to get there. Also turn the tweeter atenuater's all the way up on the speakers.

Thanks for the advice Clark, but I have already done that. The tweeters in the cabs are cranked. I have mucked about with the frequencies both on the head and my bass and still have a very dark sound. I think that the cabs themselves are simply not bright by nature.
I appreciate your suggestion, but I have kind of resigned myself to getting different cabs for this head. I really did hope they would be it for me, but it seems not.
So, my question again is, has anyone run this head through any other cabs? Or more specifically through Bergs?

It is such a small bass amp that why don't you take it to a shop where you can plug-in the amp and check. I know that the Ampeg and SWR cabs that have been some of my back line on fly out gigs sounded great and bright with the RH450.

Without transgressing my status as a dealer - I have tried the RH450 with the Bergy cabs and there is much more going on in the high end on the Bergy cabs than on the TC cabs. Generally the Bergy cabs are more open than most bass cabs so no big surprise really. I really like the RH450 and it works very well with the rather cool Rebel cabs, I do agree that the tweeters need to be on full to get an "airy" sound - they are sweet sounding but fairly directional due to the nature of the co-axial design.

I agree that these cabs have plenty of volume and low end and the vertical stacking is a real bonus to hearing yourself in a gigging situation. Despite my initial reservations, after spending some time with this gear I have found it to be be very effective.

Thanks guys, that 's what I was hoping to hear!
I fully planned on trying the RH450 through Bergs, before I exchanged the cabinets, but was hoping to get others thoughts.
Also, being a rather lazy person, I thought finding out if the sound I hear in my head, might be more likely achieved with Bergs then the TC cabs, would save me having to load everything up and take 'em back. So, in short, I'll be loading them up on Saturday and returning them.

Someone mentioned that those who didn't get selected for the Test Drive program got coupons for a free footswitch. I'm strongly considering buying one of these soon. Anyone have one of these coupons they'd be willing to share? :)

Back on topic......
I'm a die hard DR Hibeams fan, but ran across that Sam Ash (nickel) string deal (see Hot Deals) so I bought some and tried them out. Still not a fan of the nickel but I was able to make a new preset that brightened them up enough to deal with them and still keep the sound I use for the DR's. A small thing, but a nice feature.
Still can't find a use for the Tubetone though. And the cabs do collect marks pretty easily, but no damage. I need to get a bag for the head though.


Still lovin' it. I will most likely be selling my unused gear to get one of these setups when I have to give it back. I'll never sell the SVT rig though....

The funny thing about all this posting about tone is that although I love the RH450 and Cabs and am negotiating a way to keep it all at the end of my teat period for a dozen reasons the real source of my tone is my Line 6 pod xt live(and before that pod xt pro) There needs to be more discussion about this product because with the amp, effect,and cabinet models in this thing you can achieve a variety of incredible fat tones from a super thick distortion to a dub thick bass tone to a sup punchy solo funk tone that all transcend the rig I have. Now you need to start with the best rig you can(like the TC RH450 and cabs) but once you put this on the front end and tweak it properly I am now convinced it is unbeatable. You really have to do the gain structure properly but man does it give you 5 main amp sounds you dream of once you personalize the sounds into presets. And it delivers such huge signal that your headroom on your amp becomes massive. I can get soooo loud with Bass Pod into my RH450 and can make my 2 x 10 cabs sound like a stack of 10's and 18's because the tone is so rich it just hits you in the face right away! It is not for the faint of heart because you need to tweak,tweak,tweak to set up all the options each sound has so this would not be for a plug and play type player. but man is it cool once you do. You can have a wah funk sound next to an octaver next to a overdrive sound that shakes you balls. And so much more. Awsome!

Just ordered RS210. It will be here next week. Anyone tried this cab with Markbass or Acoustic image?

I will be using it with Markbass F1 and Clarus 2R.

Just by looking at the spec, this is really small 2x10 cabinet. Does this cab still has enough low-end for small gigs?

Something else I learned on a gig last night in reference to the discussion before on the darkness of tone these cabs can tend to have is that the HOSA /Speakon cables that come with the TC cabs are crappy compared to good cable. I tried the HOSA /Speakon instead of my usual Mogami speaker cables and WOW did they sound muddy compared to the Mogami. I read a thread about the Speakon being superior as connectors and tried them but the Hosa cable just could not compare! I would say that anyone getting a new amp or cabs should always start with some high end instrument cable and speaker cable like the Mogami. It is way worth the extra $20 to $30 extra per cable it can cost. And if you can solder well, you can buy the cable in length you want and solder your own Neutrik connectors on for soooo cheap. Just a Huge difference when you turn stuff up and want that clear, fat, crisp punch! That is how you get the full awesome sound out of the TC electronic RH450 and cabs.
