BTW, did anyone else but me notice that everyone who got amps were not only male but most looked to be way under 40? AJ was the oldest looking guy on there (no offense, pal), and he doesn't look any older than 35. If I'm wrong about that, please correct me, but it sure looks like everyone who won is young and male. That's fair.

I'll take that as a compliment Jimmy!
I'm 46.;)

wow, say, you mean Arlene´s Grocery in NYC ? that place still exists ? i played a gig there back in 97 (if you´re from europe, like me, that is something to remember :smug:). that brings back strong memories...
i remember they had a female "doorwoman" who was wearing a russian-style bear-fur-cap (it was november).

sorry for derailing the thread for a second ;)

cheers,
lowstar

Yeah that's the place. Why are you surprised it's still there? Was it not nice when you were there? It's small but I found it to be a pretty cool venue except for their weird load in system.

Didn't see the doorwoman btw:hmm:

Back to this Amp....

Premier Guitar magazine has a review up

Invalid Link Removed

Thanks for the link. Is it me or did the "review" sound more like a rehash of the TC Electronic videos? And they knew is sounded better the "other" mini amp with just one note? But they won't mention the name of the "other"? I realize that most review have been getting more and more watered down to please the advertiser, but this seemed extreme.

oh, i liked the place very much. it´s just that NYC changes very fast, and some things just disappear, no matter if they are good or not. even balducci´s was gone for a while. ;) but i hear it´s back in a new location.

cheers,
lowstar

This resentment against AJ and John is an invention of your own mind. I have nothing against any of them and I actually like them judging from my dealings with them on here.

I have enormous resentment against TC telling me they are my "opinion leaders," and for doing a giveaway where we have to prove ourselves worthy to get a free amp, then get told not only are we not worthy for a free amp, but hey, you can buy one at regular price and we'll throw in this crappy footswitch that they should give away with the amp in the first place.

And I'm developing resentment toward you for trying to make it sound like we resent AJ and John and whoever else who got a free amp.

So let's make this perfectly clear...as I am not an "opinion leader," I can't speak for Paul or Synasthesia or whoever else is pissed over this contest, but I have nothing but best wishes for the winners. You, OTOH, need to quit putting words in our mouths. My resentment lies solely with TC Electronics, not the winners of the contest. I would greatly appreciate it if you would stop trying to make it sound that I'm resentful of them.

As Tom7 pointed out, you are misunderstanding the term 'opinion leader', which is a commonly used term in Marketing, and describes a general class of customer very loosely (i.e., those customers who enjoy talking to others about products).

Frankly I don't think the campaign was well considered, I am not pissed off - just stating my reaction to the campaign. I use TC stuff daily in the studio, but I am not likely to check this bass amp out or buy it - it was in my radar of curiosity but certainly not GAS radar, but I will remember the product with a negative vibe as this is what their ad campaign has left me with... but if the campaign alienates a few who respond here, it will alienate many others who don't. I don't think it is over--reaction, I am just stating that there is a negative vibe I have with this product OUT of this campaign. TC didn't have to take this approach. For those of you who don't have a negative vibe, all power to you. Some people certainly do.

Sigh. There is no need to attack anyone here, I am just trying to explain that "opinion leader" is simply one industry's jargon and no cause for offense.
...
At any rate, seriously, there is no need to take shots at someone who is just trying to promote understanding here. :rollno:

Aren't you taking this personally? I am not taking a shot at you but I work in HE primarily, and I was a pro in the MI industry for many years but it is now a commercial hobby. In HE, Wikipedia is the bane of academia; it has the semblance of encyclopaedic authority but it isn't.

Wikipedia, is an open source site, it is editable and not a source of authority. Useful for quick reference, but if you are quoting it as authority, it is not reliable. If you are quoting a Wikipedia entry as a measure of significance, it is not. You could raise a page for almost anything or anyone, anonymously.

I agree that the Wikipedia comment was not the best source. However, again, what Tom7 was pointing out is that 'opinion leader' is just a loose term used in the Marketing discipline (of which I'm a part) to loosely describe those consumers who enjoy talking to others about new products. The connotation of 'leader' as being superior or somehow elevating a person described by this term as being 'above others' (which seems to be the way some are taking it) is false, which is what Tom7 was trying to point out.

And, again, per JimmyM's other comments, I think he also is not understanding the trial program either. I don't think anyone is getting 'free gear', just a short-term home trial, after which, the gear must be returned or purchased (probably at a discount, which makes sense, as 'payment' for taking the time to do the trial and 'talk about it' with peers).

There are a lot of loose terms about. Some, can mislead and others can offend. Prince Harry was in hot water for while here in the UK for using the shortened form of 'Pakistani.' When a word travels, it represents various ideas and that can often lead to something beyond the original intent. It is the nature of language.

In anycase, it is odd that TC has no other description to use in an international campaign. Is TB really that influential or significant? If it is, and it probably is, then TC must be playing the odds, but it surely recognises that print journals have lost their shine. Is there a TC trialist described as leading MI journalist?

Given enough pages, all threads seem to mutate into off-thread topics. I may have missed something along the way here, but initially the excitement level for the Rebel was at a fever pitch, and then along came the chance to qualify as a tester for TC. At that time, there was no mention of corporate tactics, favoritism, sexism, or the like from anyone. Everyone had an equal chance to qualify, and seemed excited at the prospect. It's TC's football, as the saying goes, and they can make the rules any way they see fit.

Now that TC has chosen the lucky few, for whatever reasons, there seems to be a lot of sour grapes being mashed here from players who either think they're more deserving, or can't figure out how in hell some of those players made the cut. From there, this thread seems to have deteriorated into thinly veiled name calling, and exercises in industry phrases and semantics.

I'm sure some marketing honcho at TC is reading and watching this thread, grinning from ear to ear, thinking of how no amount of advertising dollars could pay for this kind of intense interest. Whether the Rebel450 is a great, good or bad amp and cab combo, all of this interest is sure to translate into sales, as enough players will be willing to pay to find out. And, in a way they're getting all of our opinions and testing, and we're literally doing all of the R&D for the next generation Rebel for them, at no cost to them.

At this point I would hope this thread can get back on track, and that is get feedback from the testers and buyers writing about the Rebel450 system, and how it is working in the real world gig arena. TC has put the system in enough diverse bass-hands out there that players from jazz to punk, and every style in between will have a much better time deciding to make the plunge and buy one, whether that be new, or used from someone that decided it wasn't for them.

The Classifieds here is a prime example of how this principle works. Sellers are constantly saying how this amp or that cabinet wasn't what they were looking for, and yet they always manage to move them on to someone who thinks it may just be for their style.

It's either time to get back on track in this thread, or start a new one...

Aloha,
Ian

Well, in accordance with Chef's wishes, I won't reply and be nasty about it, but I will point out that in that case, this was an audition to be a customer, which kind of makes me want to turn my anger in on myself. Not helping me feel better, Ken...and neither is seeing guys my age or slightly younger with full heads of hair...life is so unfair ;)
