Team Trace Elliot! Part II

Hey I could anyone give me some opinions about the Trace Elliot 1048H ?

I have the GK 1001rb-II amp, I'm playin' punk/stoner rock with a pick and often a distortion. I'm looking for a good rock cab which can give me many sound options.
I heard a lot of good stuff about Trace Elliot and got interested in their stuff. I was also thinking about the GK neo 410 but someone said I should check out this cab.
My only problem is that I can't try those cabs 'cause they aren't available in my local shops. I can only order them but then I'll have to buy them :/
I was thinking about a 2x 1048H cabs. Is it a versatil cab? With good lows but also capable of making a "metallic" rock sound?
Is it sterile sounding(I hate sterile sounding cabs like Hartke)?

Any opinions or advises about what TC gear would fit the 1001rb-II would be helpful! :)

No, I think the Trace cabs are really nice sounding cabs. Not sterile at all- punchy and fat rather. That 1048 is a heavy beast, so you have to not mind that weight. Put that puppy on wheels, and be good to your friends! But it's a good cab, and good for what you're doing, I think.

Mine was great... I've re-geared though and it's gone. Not for want of good sound though.

Here's the workhorse I just picked up today ! It's a GP11 Mark V combo. I can't believe how good this baby sounds and only $325. Talk about alot of mids when it's set flat !

It continually dumbfounds me how so few buyers there are for classic trace that this sort of deal is unremarkable but for the obvious value.
Would you like a number with that?

Is it the weird light or Markbass speakers in there?

Got a preshape setting?

Nice!

Yeah, they have a lot of mids. I love mids, but actually keep the shape button in because it beefs up the low end. Then I dial some mids back in with the EQ.

Sure , I'd like a number ! I'm guessing because it's a late eighties/early nineties model that the original Celestions are in there ? I don't know . In a while I may replace the old speaks with Emenince Legend BB102's ?

There's the pre-shape on the amp that sounds great for slapping and as it was suggested, I'm experimenting with adding some mids on the graphic with the preshape for a nice finger tone since the pre-shape adds alot of depth to the tone. What a deal , though. Great tone, footswitch for the graphic and preshape plus a quality d.i. with pre/post e.q. and I can add an extension if I want. Great all around combo. For $380 more , I can replace all 4 speakers if I feel it's necessary. :hyper:

The short amount of time I had last night to listen for a good finger tone ended up being just that ! I didn't use the preshape , but it looked awfully close to the preshape when I used my ears and not my eyes to dial it in. Crazy because I've never had an e.q. shape with anything cut for finger tone.

Hey Session, I bet you won't need to swap those speakers. I had the originals in mine and it was always present and punchy. But... I'm also a recent re-convert back to the old-school ethic of "if it's original, it probably belongs in there" way of thinking...

Nice score either way!

I'll be rehearsing with it tonight to see how it stands up ! Speaker design and performance have improved over the last 25 years so if it makes it a better cab I'd be open to it rather than lugging around another cab.

A couple questions I have is what the actual wattage is and what ohms the 4-10 is. I'm hoping it's 8 since i read someone using an extension cab with the combo ?

All the old cabs are 8 ohm apart from the 2x15's. There are usually matching 4x10 cabs for sale, but you'll be paying a little more realistically for one.

Wattage isn't too important. You've got the right eq to get the most out of that combo! Follow the Trace Elliot instructions, which are often quoted. To get louder you need more speakers. Never booost the lows, in fact you will get a lot more low end volume by cutting the low lows.

+1 Right info there. Too much importance all-around placed on watts...

There are some great youtubes of Mark King in concert with Living Colour, not that youtube is the greatest sound.

You want on axis or off axis recording? I'm not a fan of 4x10, even Trace 4x10 although they did put the speakers as close together as possible.
