Tec Puma Bass amps

Any one open up the AMP yet, would love to see an internal picture?

Somewhere earlier in this thread (or the thread I have up on the entire TecAmp rig), TBer Passinwind identified the power module they are using. There are great pictures of it on their site. It looks (and sounds) like premo stuff, and I hear a bit of frequency specific compression (very nice) that suggests TecAmp might be using a bit of the optional DSP capabilities of the power module.

I can't remember the name of the company that supplies the class D power amp, but it's a sweet looking unit, and seems a step above some of the others out there at the moment.

I believe the Whappo Jr. only comes in 4ohms, which would make a single one not optimal with the 1000 (you'd basically have a VERY expensive 500 with a few extra bells and whistles).

The 1000 bridges to an 8ohm minimum.

ah poop - i forgot. I wish the 1000 was just a mono head- it's really backwards the way they have it set up. That's OK i'll be @ NAMM next month & I want to hear their cabs too.

+1 That's the primary reason I went with the 500 over the 1000 (since I typically use one large 4ohm cab). The 500 actually has plenty of ooomph for what I do.

I believe Richard Bona is now using the 1000 with two small, 4ohm TecAmp112's. I bet that's a powerful small rig!

I'd love to hear the 1000 bridged into that lightweight 8ohm TecAmp410. I bet that is KILLER KILLER KILLER!

Just received my new Tec gear a week or so ago - the Puma 500 is a fantastic bit of kit, really powerful EQ although at home here I tend to run it flat. Not rehearsed or gigged with it yet.

The cab is nice as well - slightly bigger sounding than the 2 12" Tech Sounsystems cabs I had previously but it's slightly less managable now (it's only 20kg so I can't really complain).

Apologies for the quality of the pics.

Nice! That head looks great in rack mount mode. I dig the black/chrome/black/chrome/black thing.

+1 on the EQ. While I don't use that voicing filter, I basically run the EQ as you do, with just a touch of upper mid dialed out. That lower mid control is GREAT for pumping up a bit of 'burp'. It's really a nice head to my ear.

I assume that is the larger 'L' 212? I have the 'S' which is narrower. I think the 'L' gives you a little more low end extension. I bet that sounds great! Congrats!

Edit: NICE Wal bass!

It's an M212. I had a go with the Puma 212 combo which is based upon the S212 cab and it didn't quite do it for me, so went for the M212. My original plan was to get 2 XS112 but it was way too expensive.

I've been using the older Tec cabs for years and they really are superb.

I went from a Nemesis NA650 to the Puma 500 and I couldn't be happier. My whole rig, inc. rack and cables probably weighs a total of 26kg!

Cool! Yeah, that 'M' cab (I always get confused by the L, M, etc.) would have quite a bit more 'beef' than the smaller 's' 212. I bet that sounds great!

Have you messed around with those different crossover frequencies on the tweeter control? I run mine on the second level of the 'soft attack' (which is a kind of airy, upper treble sort of tweeter thing). On the lower level of the 'hard' attack, you can really grind if you want! The highest level of the 'hard attack' is way over the top on the little 's' 212, since there's a lot of upper mids cranking out of those drivers to begin with, but it might sound pretty cool with what I assume is the bigger bottom and less mid punchy 'M' version.

That's a really cool circuit to my ear!

Edit: In case you didn't see my earlier edit... NICE WAL!!!!

Hey Ken,
We spoke awhile back when I had just gotten my Puma 1000 from Glenn at Austin Bass Traders. Looks like you got quite a Puma thread going. I'm using my 1000 with my Epi UL410 and also an EA NL210 and it sounds great with both cabs. I was using my Fodera Emperor 5 with this rig and it sounded great but I just got an FClef J type vintage 5 ash / maple combo and this bass sounds killer with this setup. I saw the Tec cabs at NAMM and they were very lightweight. I only heard the 210 but it sounded great with the 1000. You were right when you said that Glock users would like this amp. I sold my HR when i got the Puma. i could never get the mids quite right on the HR and besides, the Puma is about 33 lbs. lighter. Thanks for always keeping us 'informed" about the latest gear. Do you have any of their cabs? I'm curious to know how they sound. I had the old Tech Bassline head and speakers awhile back and liked the sound but the speakers couldn't handle a lot of power.
Keep thumpin'
Jay

Hey Jay,

Cool! I continue to love mine. I actually now have the s212 cab in 4ohms, and it just kills. I have another thread somewhere on the entire rig if you seach my name and Puma, and also used that rig to record some sound clips of my Alleva. I believe the link to those clips is on page 25 of the Alleve mega thread. If you can't find that stuff, PM me and I'll hunt down the links for you. The cool thing about the s212 is that it is the same small footprint as the 210, and only a few inches taller. It really does 'feel' like a 210 when you schlep it (40 pounds), but it has a lot of ooomph.

I really like the mid control and voicing with this head and the Epi cabs a lot. The TecAmp cabs sit kind of in between the Berg AE line and the EpiUL line... smoother and wider than the quite aggressive and tight AE's, but with more punch and grind than the very smooth and very wide Epi UL (II) cabs.

I would think two of the 4ohm s210's being pushed by the Puma1000 would be just crazy good sounding!

Enjoy!!!!

K

Edit: If my 410UL was 8ohm, I'd buy a Puma1000 and be done!

Ken,
Nice to hear from you again. I remember seeing the 212 at NAMM and picking it up and thinking, "this is amazing". I couldn't believe a 212 cab that size weighing that little. BTW, what does the 212 run cost wise? Did you get it from Rawn Randall? I've known Rawn for years since he was with Tobias in L.A. After R2 Musical went under I didn't know what happened to him. Thanks to one of these threads i was able to find out that he works with the TecAmp US distributor. So far my rig has been working great. I'd love to get aTecAmp cab to use with my 1000. Of course shipping one out here to Hawaii would cost a pretty penny. Anyway, I'm glad you and some of the others are enjoying your TecAmp gear. It's really well made stuff that sounds great and is cutting edge.
Take care and have a great year.
Regards,
Jay

Hey Jay,

All the prices, etc. are on the Osiamo website, including Rons contact info, etc. I believe the s212 is $1,200.
