TecAmp S212/Puma500 Ultra Light Rig

I'm also curious, how easy or difficult is it to get service on these amps in the US? I could see that being a potentisl issue down the road.

I understand the Puma500 sounds a bit fatter and warmer than the 1000, but that's on second hand information. The power output should be the same.

I'm pretty comfortable that if you have a problem within the warranty time, Osiamo would make sure you get another replacement amp and/or cab. After warranty, I would assume it would be similar to Glock or Epifani amps or whatever... back across the pond for service. Just guessing, but if service and support after the warranty is a key consideration, these brands might not be optimum. I have enough amps and cabs that this is never and issue for me, and other than a few amps from a variety of companies being 'dead out of the box' (which happens sometime), I have not had an amp failure since the 'bad old GK days' of the 80's.

Glenn from Austin Bass Traders was nice enough to give me a call after he spoke with the TecAmp guys the other day.

The scoop on the cabs is that the XS and S cabs will all get the revised tuning (along with the combo's) to expand the low end. The M and L cabs will not be modified, and the current specs on the L and M on the website are accurate.

And... for anyone interested, here's a clip I did (using my little Edirol digital recorder) of the Puma500/s212 (the new one) and my recently acquired Rob Allen Fretted Mouse. That voicing of the revised s212 sounds really nice to me with these sort of instruments... kind of like a more articulate Acme cab.

I typically run this rig flat, with just a touch of softening of the upper mids with my J style EB's. Given the BIG low end of the semi-hollowbody Mouse with that piezo pickup system, this was the first time I found use for the 'taste control'. This clip was recorded with the taste knob at about 10 o'clock, which basically has the opposite effect of a typical 'enhance' knob... it rolls off a bit of deep bass and pumps up the upper mids just a touch... perfect for these big sounding piezo loaded instruments. For the rest of the EQ, upper mids slightly cut at 11 o'clock, bass, lower mid and treble flat, tweeter at the 'mid soft attack' setting.

The little bit of woof you hear in the low end at some points in the clip are the little internal Edirol mic's giving up the ghost a little bit, but you can at least get a feel for that wonderful 'deep but articulate' tone this rig is capable of. Of course, the Rob Allen has something to do with it also:bassist:

It's a keeper, but my original s212 will remain my main gigging cab. If I get in a crazy mood, I'll order up an M212 or L410 for the heck of it to cover the larger gigs I do! However, I'm still very happy with the Bergantino AE410/F1 for those types of gigs. That rig SLAMS.

I have the original s212 in another location (actually another city), and now am using nickels on the LG Alleva, so that A/B will not be possible. Also, I'm not sure my little recorder would adequately capture the low end difference, since those little mic's compress the bottom a bit from what I actually hear when recording.

Edit: I just did another gig with the original s212 and my Puma (with my beloved Coppolo LM5) on Saturday. Another horrible room (an old church that serves as an event venue now, complete with hollow wooden stage with on overhang... so you can imagine). I've played this venue many times before with a variety of rigs. The TecAmp was the best yet. I ran the head flat, but, for the first time in a live situation, used the 'Taste' control at about 10 o'clock to roll deep low end off and punch up the mid mids a bit. While an ugly room is an ugly room, I could at least hear the note definition clearly, the low end was still full, and the upper mids and treble emerged pretty well considering that they usually disappear in a room like this. The band was loud, and I continue to miss the full force wump and ooomph of a good 410 in that situation, but I never was buried, and even a few slap passages on a few tunes were even sounding, if not quite 'rumbling the room'.

I continue to be quite pleased with this rig. I continue to give it an A+ on tone, and a B on volume compared to my 410's. Not bad considering the size and weight.

I bought the NL210 and love it, but now I found the perfect partner for it (and for my CXL112):

The Tecamp Puma 500 :hyper:

What a great little amp! It sounds more "cream" than the aguilar and the pots are more responsive. With the AG I had to tweak a knob a lot before I noticed anything (except the bass Knob which is the best in the business :-). With the tecamp I can make little tweaks very effective. And the taste Knob is delicious.
I also love the AG500 (with my Fender Jazz Bass it sounds amazing), but the Tecamp with its 2,6Kg is telling me that I can let go the AG :hyper::crying:

Excellent. I bet that sounds great! While I haven't heard the match-ups, I always felt the Puma heads would be a great matchup with a variety of the EA cabs, especially the NL210, since the voicing of that cab is in the same universe as the 's' series TecAmp cabs. And, your get a quieter (i.e., no hiss), louder, and IMO more reliable higher quality amp compared to the EA micro offerings.

Ken, I hope you are on commission from Tecamp! After reading you comments I found a Puma 500 2x12 combo to try. It is just “cream” I was very impressed with the lovely round bottom end, so I’ve ordered a Puma 1000 head, I’m going to use it with my EAnl210 and cxl112 just now, even if I’m only driving into 8 ohms from each amp. I found the combo to be a loud 270 watts into 8 Ohms. The iamp800 will need to find a new home now.

At least with regard to the Puma 1000, it did IME/IMHO pair up very well with the NL-210, and the 8-ohm NM-410 was just monstrous when driven by the Puma 1000 in bridged mode. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

+1 The 500 into a 4ohm NL210 or the 1000 into the 8ohm NM410 would be pretty cool. I would still be gun shy on the reliability of those EA 10" drivers, but I do like the tone.

I bet that will sound awesome. I hear a lot of tonal overlap between my s212 and my previously owned NL210. And... no commission for me... full price like everyone else! It's a 'labor of love' with this stuff and some of the MB heads for me!:bassist:

I see there`s alot of good words about the TecAmp 212 cabs here, well, I played a gig last night with the Puma Combo 212, and IMO it was no good at all. No precense, no volume, nothing. Very scooped tone, reminded me of some of the Ampeg stuff. I was pretty shocked, cause I love my L410 cab, but this sounded nothing like it.
I guess 12" are not for me, and I`m starting to think that the lightweight heads may not be for me too. I don`t like lack of low-end headroom of theese amps.
