Tech 21 at NAMM

i almost see the need for a bypass or blend, though it would be useless to me. I'll pass on a crap compressor added on as an afterthought, though. This isn't meant to be all things to everyone.

no pics, but it's called the red ripper.

btw, i doubt the vt will put a crimp in sales of tube amps. as great as the vt is, there's just nothing like that feeling of having a row or two of power tubes push your signal. i know a lot of people got it so they have tube amp sounds, but i think those who use a vt and don't use tube amps never intended to have them in the first place. i'm not giving mine up, that's for sure.

It's got me thinking I can get away with a tube power/slave amp rather than a full tube head. This beast with a power amp is gonna kill. Although I would like a blend control on the effects loop. Not the end of the world though.

Dang, I was hoping they would change the way the save feature works, as in put it on a button instead of on the footswitch's, with it on the footswitch if you accidentally tap the switch twice (and the footswitch's are easy to do that with) it will overwrite your preset to wherever the knobs are set, right in the middle of a song at a gig. A button save would fix that.

And it looks like the bank and fx loop are set up just like the Deluxe. IMO, they should make it where you hit the switch once to activate the loop (so you don't have to have it programmed into a preset) and hit it twice to change the bank, seems like common sense to me but the deluxe is just the opposite.

And no blend -BOOOO!

This box looks pretty cool (except for the whiteish bare aluminum) but in my opinion if they keep this configuration, they did not fix the problems that the Deluxe has.

I'm not a hater, I own the Deluxe and the VTbass, just my observations on the picture of this new box.

is that the way it works? i was thinking it was 6 presets in 2 switchable banks, but it looks like you might be more accurate judging by the labeling. oh well, i'll never need any more than 3 different sounds (clean, grind, dirt), so no matter...might even work out even better with the upright!

just curious jimmy what your settings are for clean, grind and dirt if you don't mind :) thanks

all the same for each sound, low slightly past 12:00, mid 12:00, character slightly backed off from 12:00, highs at 10:00, add drive to taste.

Crazy because that's exactly the settings I settled on. (for rock n roll stuff)

I like the drive to be right at that threshhold where it just starts to get a bit hairy - and only growls if you dig in. This "tone zone" has always been my favorite sound for Rock n Roll through a nice tube amp. I'm not too into full-on overdrive but the shades of sound leading up to tube overdrive are the best, IMO.

This is a great description,I just love the "tone zone" factor too.
I sorta hear the hint of an envelope follower when ya' spank it :D

ya, i've been using my vt for a fairly aggressive sound most of the time, but since i got that british pedal for christmas, i'm really getting into that 60's british invasion hint of overdrive thing. reminds me of the dave clark five or the animals.

As someone who a) regularly uses a BDDI Deluxe, and b) just bought a VT, I'd just like to say:

That figures.

That said, +1 on this thing missing a blend knob. I wouldn't be at all surprised if T21 simply figured it will keep their manufacturing costs way down to follow the form factor and digital programming section of the Deluxe exactly, and the analog part of the VT exactly. But yeah, the blend is a critical component of the BDDI, IMO.

Also, I've found the drive goes from usable to ridiculous/worthless very quickly on the VT, around 11:00 depending on my usual EQ settings. Anyone else feel that way?

Finally, I expect (hope!) the final product will be anodized or otherwise coated rather than leave it bare aluminum. This photo screams prototype, not production.
