Tech 21 Club

Same here. I bought VTDI recently to mess around with it a little and then sell it...

The experience went pretty much exactly as I expected. Sure things can get fun and dirty, but at the end of the day I just can't get into the Tech21 drive sound. I suppose it works really well in a band, but I don't play in a band that uses that kind of sound. So away it goes.

Just curious, did you record any sound samples? Interested for no other reason aside from the fact that I like to hear how others' unique setups sound through things.

No, I'm not set up for that at home. To test out the pedal, I took everything else out of the equation, or didn't put anything else IN the equation, depending on how you look at it. So it was:

07 Fender MIA Jazz>VTDI>Carvin BX700 (flat EQ)>RB210. Pure and simple.

I did attempt to stack it after my Sadowsky stompbox preamp to see if the VT drive did anything interesting to the Sadowsky tone, but if it did, I couldn't hear it. Dirt is dirt, and it washed out any nuance the Sadowsky EQ adds to my tone. At least to my ears.

Wish I could help. Really do wish I had the gear in my house to do simple recording. But that stuff is currently about 5th on my GAS list, so I'm about never years away from realizing that dream. Such is the life we've chosen...

It's a misconception that because the VT Bass DI has a "Drive" control, using it = distortion. It's cable of clean sounds by running lower Drive settings and or reducing the Blend. There is a difference between a tube emulated clean tone and the sound of your pickups being buffered with added EQ. You can bypass the SansAmp circuit completely if desired. Rogers pedal is a clean preamp with EQ. Great pedal but a completely different purpose. If that's what you're going for our Q\Strip would be a better choice.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. I'd say stick with the Sadowsky if you're happy with it.

Good point.

I often use my VTBDI with BLEND full on and DRIVE as high as 11:00 (eleven o'clock) for some mild overdrive for some grit but no distortion.

Also, while on the topic of drive, despite misconceptions of StingRays being super hot by default, I've had to completely re-familiarize myself with my VTDI after picking up a 2014 Precision with CS ’62 pickups - that are apparently extremely hot by comparison.

My StingRay drive setting of just below 12:00 basically turned my Precision signal to distorted mush to my ear. I haven’t quite settled yet on a drive level with my precision, but all signs so far seem to indicate that it’ll be in the 9:00 – 10:00 range for my preference. :wideyed:

To say I was surprised by this, is an understatement.
