Tech 21 Club

Bass Musician Magazine had a quick write up on the Sansamp YYZ. Here is a link to the article - [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Can't wait to play with this next week at NAMM!

Here is the full article

Wanting to streamline and simplify his gear for new projects, Geddy Lee partnered with Tech 21 to design a signature rackmount SansAmp, the GED-2112. This challenging collaboration involved distilling a boatload of equipment into a single rackspace. Stepping up to yet another challenge, Tech 21 further distilled the rackmount into a super-compact, portable pedal format. The SansAmp YYZ offers Geddy’s core sound and the versatility for many different styles.

Features include all-analog SansAmp technology to record directly and enhance previously recorded tracks. For live performances, the SansAmp YYZ can drive a power amp and speakers, augment an existing amplifier set-up, or run directly into the mixer of a PA system. A Mix control blends the ratio of high-end studio clean and dirty bass tube amp tones. The Tight button adds definition to notes in cleaner settings and make distorted tones snappier. Other features include a Drive control, active 3-band EQ and Master Volume. Operable with 9V alkaline battery (not included) or optional DC power supply.

I don't know if it's necessarily that simple, I think that pedal functions a good bit differently - splitting the signal into higher and lower signals, distorting the higher of the two, and then mixing them back... at least that's how I've understood the GED to work (could very well be wrong).

That's why the mix knob is labeled deep and drive if I'm not mistaken. It's like a bi-amp rig in a single enclosure.

Tight could very well just be a synonym for bite though.

The YYZ is not a Character pedal though it uses the same style chassis. The signal is split internally to the Deep and Drive sections and you can Blend between the two which are summed to a single output.

If you note the graphic on the pedal the low, mid and high controls are for the Drive side only. The saturation on the Deep channel is preset. I'll have to check but I assume the Deep is preset to Geddy's preferred setting.

I just bought a Q\Strip to go on my acoustic pedalboard to coax something useful out of my banjos. I have been on a spirit quest for preamps that will make my stuff sound...less bad. I took it to church on Sunday and used it for my bass and holy crap. I spent more time fiddling with the knobs finding tasty bass tones than I did actually playing. So many options, so many sounds.

I am also trading a bass cab for a VTDI tomorrow. I'm excited to mess around with it to see firsthand what all the fuss is about, but I'm not actually a huge fan of the Sansamp drive sound, so it'll probably eventually go up on the market to recoup some cash. I don't actually need that kind of sound because I rarely play bass at all anymore, but that doesn't mean I can't have a little fun for a while before I pass it on to the next person.

Preset tone Geddy's preferred setting. So, with his bass, his hands, and the rest of his gear, gain staging, etc, it'll sound just like him. What if your bass is hotter?

I don't have a Jazz Bass handy at the present time, to play through my GED-2112. Possibly with a Jazz Bass strung with Rotosound Swing Bass strings, played with a heavier touch, it could get pretty close to a Geddy Lee-type of sound, but I can't say for certain.

Geddy sure nailed a Chris Squire "Roundabout" type tone on the R&R HOF Induction Ceremony when he sat in with Yes, playing through one of the GED-2112 prototypes. :bassist:

There's a couple of guys that are running GED-2112's that have posted Rush play along videos on YouTube, playing both Rickenbackers and Jazz Basses, and sounding very much like Geddy to my ears. If you're playing a Jazz Bass with hotter pickups, I'm thinking you just wouldn't need to set the "Drive" as high, but you'd still get a very Geddy-type of tone, if that's what you're after.

Same here. I bought VTDI recently to mess around with it a little and then sell it...

Tech 21 posted a short video of the YYZ pedal on FB, I can't remember the gentleman's name who's playing through it, but he's one of the YouTubers that I mentioned earlier in the thread. He's playing a GL Jazz Bass, and it sounds glorious.

......I really don't need one,.....a Para-Driver should be the next Tech 21 product on my list,.....but Holy Cow,......

That's Tim Starace of YYNOT. He is probably the best Rush bassist this side of Geddy Lee (just my humble opinion).

Also, I bought the rig (minus the YYZ pedal) that he is playing through in the video and will be testing that out at my rehearsal this coming weekend. 1 x 12 200 watt combo with another 1 X 12 extension cab. They weigh just a little under 30 pounds each.

Congratulations on the new rig!

Do you plan on buying a YYZ pedal when they're released?

And I agree, Tim's videos are excellent. He definitely knows his stuff.

I played with the pedal and it is killer. Much easier to use than the GED-2112, which I own. Yes, I have placed a preorder with Sweetwater. All the info I have is these will start shipping sometime in May. Can’t wait
