tell me about Super Ferrite pickups...need info...

The original covers were injection molded. If a CAD drawing can be made of the cover I can submit drawing to my distributor for a price quote. I have two places to get quotes from. I am not able to draw 3D in CAD

I would like to put the brakes on a bit about the fatal flaw theory. Because that's what it is. There are probably millions of SF pups out there an they are not known for a high rate of failure, at least not higher than any other pup out there. If anyone has stats to show otherwise, I'd love to see them. I don't believe they are a ticking time bomb waiting to fail either. Epoxies when fully cured do not have significant off-gassing unless they are silicone based which is never used with electronics for that very reason. Secondly, you can use oxygen free copper for lead wires to prevent oxidation, or other reactions which often require oxygen to occur. Thirdly, I don't see evidence of wire chemical deterioration in the pictures. I feel like Hartley Peavey and his engineers would have taken the time to select the proper materials to make a solid long lasting pickup. That's my opinion, you can take it with a grain of salt...but I don't think we all need to worry about future failure of our pickups.

That said, I think it's great to develop a copy of these pups since they are out of production and highly sought after.

It's not a standard epoxy most are familiar with. It's a molding resin. When these are machined to harvest the cover the smell is obvious.

The plan is to make bladed pickups once the pickup covers can be made/sourced (the hope is to at least be able to 3D print a couple of covers for bladed prototypes while trying to figure out an economical way to bulk source covers - they are just such a proprietary shape that no one would carry them). In the meantime, I decided with Matt to try a prototype with pole screws just to see how the coils would sound. Hopefully I (with help from better bass players than I (any Massachusetts local folks want to help out?)) can get some sound and or video clips up comparing stock to this prototype once I have it.

I don't think there will be a noticeable difference. But I have not went from blade to poles on bass only guitar. The two screw per string was done to make sure it's as close to blade as possible

Here is how the EMG35 is looking. Cramped comes to mind. No room to spare but I think I got it. In order to keep same as factory dimensions the winding has to be perfect.

4 string SF re creations done. These are as close to factory as possible to fit in EMG35 and other covers. This coil height is about 1mm taller than factory an because the blade (same size as factory) is the bobbin it's 1mm slimmer. These changes have opened up just enough space to fit in the EMG35 after tape/shielding/tape. These will be wired with U.S. standard lead wire. Black/Red for neck and Black/Blue for bridge. Blue as representation of the bridge wires.

P.S. anyone on this thread from Massachusetts and have any experience recording video/audio? Know anyone who might be willing to help me out/come play these with me? I'd like to do a shootout (fingerstyle, pick, slap, maybe how they take effects...open to suggestions) between vintage SFs , the new SF prototype with pole screws, and the neodymium prototype (pics forthcoming tonight).

I have a few sets to get done then I can design the the 5. I'm not sure as of now if a 5 in the factory Cover can be done without making a switch to smaller wire or taller bobbin. Idk how players would feel about such changes. But to fix the fall off something has to give

I'd be happy with a 5 in a more normal cover, like EMG40 or Bartolini P2. I just want that tone!! :bassist:
