That one random song your cover band does that nobody else does.

country cover bands...you kinda have to stick with the tried and true formula. however, we do play "on the edge" at times during our 4 hours of music...I've never heard another country cover band do these

Six Ways to Sunday - Blackberry Smoke
Amos Moses - Jerry Reed
Fooled Around and Fell in Love - Alvin Bishop
Luxury Liner - Emmylou Harris

Back in the day, my originals band would play "Enola Gay" by OMD as on of a sprinkling of covers we'd insert into each gig. Fast forward to 2019, a new project that reunited me with the singer-guitarist from that band did "Everbody's Crying Mercy" by Mose Allison, though we used the Elvis Costello arrangement as a template.

I LOVE Lizzy's 'Cowboy Song', when I was starting out, the local band of heavy-duty players would blow that out, back to back with 'Boys Are Back in Town' (of course, they were current tunes back then).

In a little trio when I started out, the guitar player and drummer were brothers, and both big-time Beatle nuts, fine with me. We were playing all the current Top 40 on our gigs, but they always included this:

I honestly don't know how much radio play this ever had (seems like I don't remember it on the radio . . . ), but they pulled it out to do. We worked up a virtually perfect copy (combining two guitar parts down to one), and I loved it every time we did it, and one of the fondest memories of a young guy starting out in the bands. I just love Ringo's little 'falling down stairs' roll in the tag where they sing ,' because I told you before (Ringo's quick fill), you can't do that', and the rest of his part. Ringo was/is the man.

You Can't Do That by the Beatles was a BIG hit back in the 60's. That's still on the set list of one of my groups and we've played it a lot.

I've never seen anyone else do these, although I'm sure someone, somewhere is playing them.

7 Nights to Rock - Moon Mullican

I Aint Drunk - Albert Collins

Last Date - Floyd Cramer

My Babe - Dale Hawkins

Love that Albert Collins song - I ain't Drunk, I'm just drinking. I saw him in concert at UC Berkeley one time. First half was a Jazz concert and then he came out and grabbed everybody by their soul with his blues! Man was he good.

OK, this is for standard issue bar bands, not tributes or niche bands. Most of us play hits, or songs that are charting now that might not stand the test of time.

But every now and then you just have to whip out one self-indulgent, random, B-side, relatively-unknown, never-saw-it-coming song and rip it because the band wants to do it.

Sometimes they wind up catching on locally and become a favorite. Such was the case in the late 80s and early 90s when a regionally-popular band I played in (I was a kid and the rest of the band members were in their thirties) played Cowboy Song by Thin Lizzy. (The intro is kind of a downer. Listen at least a minute or so. Skip to 45s if you have no patients.... like me.)

It became one of our most requested songs. I'm not saying the song is "obscure", per say. But your average bar goer, even back then, had no idea who did the song if they had even heard it. So that one worked out well.

Fast forward to last night. Our drummer (who has very eclectic musical tastes) brings up this song. I had never heard it. I was only vaguely familiar with the band in general, and couldn't have told you what any of their songs were until last night. It fits us like a glove. It kind of rocks (in a laid back 70s kinda way), and has a little bit of funk to it. The harmonies are right up our alley. It's as if the musicians in Mother's Finest were suddenly the backing band for Crosby Stills and Nash.

No Way Out - YouTube

I think we're actually going to do a version of it. We may tailor it a little to meet our band's needs. It's totally out of character for us to pull out a song that isn't a smash. But I think we're gonna give it a try.

How bout you? Does your regular bar band play one or two "out there" songs?
My all-time favorite Lizzy song. Great choice. “I got my job bustin’ broncs for the rodeo.” Ha ha ha classic.

Since the 70's my bands always did a rocked up version of the Clovers Love Potion Number 9. We started it out on the drums with a primal sounding Gene Krupa style beat on the toms and floor toms. We punched up the tempo a bit and cranked it up. We basically rock n rolled the tune. It sounded really huge that way and always packed the dance floor.

I do a lot of unusual songs. Not many bands want to play Steely Dan, but currently I'm doing a couple SD songs and they don't include "Do it Again" which is the one people play when they want to SD without all the chord changes.

Also doing Undun by The Guess Who, and several others that people know but have forgotten. It's kind of my thing to polish up the old, forgotten gems and make people happy by playing them.
