SRV is one of the greatest street musicians that ever lived (and by street I mean not formally trained, couldn't read music, he just survived on feel). First, you have never heard of him, then you try to critisize me for refering to him. You really need to educate yourself, before making such statements - you are making yourself look like a TOTAL idiot.

HAHA! Thats what it started out to be though....however, there was atleast one good "musician" in the old bands. Greg Ginn comes to mind. On the other hand, the Germs come to mind too.

I've heard of PIL, and saw the original lineup at the NY Academy of Music – I was also at the Ritz "riot" show. My band opened for Johnny Thunders* and the Heartbreakers many times in the late '70s, early '80s, and the man handed me his yellow Les Paul Jr. and showed me how to play the opening of "Jet Boy." At least four of my past bands are listed in detail at trouserpress.com. And on, and on, and on. At age 17, I was a gigging musician who was right in the center of it, playing Max's, CBGB, Hurrah.

And those aren't credentials, really -- that's just bragging. But I thought that perhaps it's the only thing a chimp like you would understand based on your foregoing posts. And tell me -- if you've distanced yourself from what you call punk 15 years ago, why all "punky" iconography and awful-sounding music on your myspace page? Are you still re-living stuff from 15 years ago? L-A-M-E.

Yup, although only 1 of us is ruining it... see the, I'm on the internet so everyone's younger then me, therefore I can act like a **** thing still pans out, especially for someone that won't state their full date of birth anyway.

How the **** is Fat Mike a bad player exactly anyway? He may be a mess live and on early albums, but he has plenty of speed and technical ability now, and writes some really cool bass lines. Don't see why he complained that he wouldn't be able to play Freeman's stuff when they did that split, I can play most those songs in the original Rancid style and I've been playing less nowhere near half as long as him. He's alot better then people - and himself - give him credit for.

Anyway that's last thing I gonna say, just thought he needed sticking up for, get it locked.

I think I wrongly misinterpreted the Seymour Duncan site, said the QP Jazz I was looking at was endorsed by him, but I think that was just a list of QP endorsers not just for the Jazz pickup.

His sound has a very bright Jazz edge to it though to my ear...

Punk music was a way of the lower class to say "F*** YOU" to the upper class. So if you are worrying about your bass tone sounding punk-ish, then you shouldn't be playing punk in the first place.
The ideal "real punk" bass sound is to have a cheap-ass craptastic bass and attack the **** out of it. But with "new punk" that whole ideal is out the window.

This makes me sad. I realize i am going off on a tangent here, and that it doesn't necessarily apply to the OP question, but after considering myself a punk almost 20 years, the one thing I have learned is that I don't get to decide what or who is punk.

It's such a personal think - you have decided to ignore all around you in search of your own destiny, way of life, thought and development. Who am I to define that for someone else???

Coming up, I always felt the Generation before mine (possibly your generation oddgwroth) supported what mine did, even if it wasn't their way - because it was punk. Now everyone is so judgemental - Johnny Rotten says no one can be punk anymore (just because your time passed?) and us grey hairs just sit around sneering at everyone.

Not for me - thanks. I still believe that we all have to walk this journey ALONE, and that we shouldn't waste our time judging someone else journey. That is what binds us together.

To the OP, Play whatever ****ing bass you like - but play it. pick it up, start a band, and shout and the top of your lungs. Have something to say, And **** **** up - EVERY TIME YOU PLAY!

Right after I got out of highschool I had a funny experience when I tried out for a "punk" band. I responded to their ad cuz they had influences listed as Sex Pistols, Stooges, Misfits, etc. I showed up at the place and it ended up being a mansion, not just a big house, but a "Silver Spoons" type mansion. Complete with a butler who even carried my gear downstairs. The guys in the band were pretty cool guys, but they were all about the gear. I showed up with my used/beat to hell Ibanez SR800 and my used GK 400RB and a crappy Crate 2x15.
They were like, "If we let you join are you gonna get a real bass and amp? You should get an old Ampeg and an old Fender Precision."
These guys had awesome vintage gear that mommy and daddy most likely bought them. A couple of vintage Les Pauls, an old Marshall stack, some crazy double bass Tama rack drums.
I told them no way, I didn't have the means to get stuff like that. Hell, I was just happy to have the stuff that I already had.
So I always thought it was ironic that I didn't get into a "punk" band because I didn't have the "right" gear.
Those guys were "anti-punk" to the core.

Punk is a fashion and a music style, nothing more.

Yes, some punks have a certain ideology about anarchy, society etc. But none of those are exclusive to punk rockers. I mean you can be an anarchist without being a punk, you can be against poverty and the injustices without being a punk.

Punk is clothes and music, all the rest is completly separated from that, yes, when you are a punk you can adhere to any ideology and make music about it. Hell even the sex pistols were a prefabricated band chosen for their esthetics by a shop owner.

And the saying F-you to the high class. That is a big joke. I must first say that I'm in no way biased because I don't come from a rich family I'm just a middle class regular guy.

Can I ask you what that so called high class can be blamed for?

Going to School?
Having a nice paying job?
Giving gifts to your kids with the means you have?
Or just flat out being born in an already rich family where your future is insured because your parents have the money to pay for a good education?

Yes, all the above deserves a big F-you no?
When people look down on rich people it's more about jealousy than anything else. Anyone can be rich, you just have to work your ass off.

Any human can choose their lifstyle, it's about being happy and having enough to live, but don't go blaming people for wanting to become doctors and make money out of it.

Think about it, when you grow out of your punk phase, when you simply are somewhere else with your musical tastes, does it mean suddenly all the troubles in the world all the injustice doesn't mean squat to you?

Not at all, you just stop wearing the clothes and stop listening to the music.

Until about 20 or 21 years old I was a big punk rock fan, a firm believer about all those ideology, then I simply stopped liking the music, It just didn't move me anymore.

What did I loose?

yeah that's right, clothes and music

The rest has nothing to do with that.
