The Über-Jay Mark2

You might want to check out these active/passive tone controls/pre-amp for J or P
Cool stuff. Nice colors. Might work on one of your future builds.

Hi Stumbo! Yes, I know East's work. I've considered replacing my Jay-Dee electronics with his 3 bands eq in the past. It didn't happen in the end. Cool stuff! A bit pricey. But top quality. Thanks! :)

Now here's an overdue update.

After much thinking it seemed to me that the tuners area was screaming for a Camphor Burl veneer with black accent. It will be mostly invisible, I know... but where it can be seen it does seem to make a difference. Some sanding required. ;)

This is going to be a passive set up with traditional B/T/V knobs. The holes have been drilled and yours truly forgot to take a picture.

The nut slot has been carved and a black Tusq nut sanded almost to measure. I'll sand it to the final size later on.

And now... just two weeks away from finishing this build, I have to go back to Europe for work :rollno: and this build will have to wait for about 5 weeks :scowl: I'm actually writing this in the transit area of Doha airport, Qatar, while waiting for my connecting flight.

While over there I'll buy some stuff for the next build.
till then... :bassist:

hey guys, thank you soo much...I'll miss the updates too :( but work is work and... at the least until I'm too busy buiding Ü-Js to take any other job ;) Besides, at this time of the year Milan is not the warmest place to be. But there are a few nice bass shops to check out :D

Waiting....

When you have time, check out these rear control mounted trim pots: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Cool stuff! Didn't know S was offering that option. thanks mate. BTW, I am still in Europe. As soon as I get a day off I'll look for the Stellartone passive system you suggested earlier and give it a try. It might be just the thing for this build. Or for the fiver fretless coming next ;)

Can't wait to get back to the build and finish it! :bassist:

We're with you mate!

Looking forward to seeing some pics of the UJM2 and your next one. :hyper:

This is TB member JohnK's custom "Ric". See build process here: Ric325Bass-PageTwo

A J bass with this type of routing was what I was referring to earlier. Seems to me that a bit more routing could be done to connect the larger routes to make more of a "tone chamber" semi-hollow body? Maybe with a f-hole cut in the back.

fascinating bass!

Thanks! :)

hey Stumbo! thanks man, I thought that was what you meant ;) And like you say, there might be room for more routing. The Mark2 wasn't supposed to deal with tone chambers. But I kinda see what a Ü-J with f-holes might look like. We might soon talk about it ;)

This build has been very inspiring so far and it has deeply affected the way I go about building a bass overall. In fact, I am afraid that each Ü-J will be radically different from the others - albeit sharing the same basic principle.

The Mark2 is where my vision of a lightweight, well balanced four stringer solid body comes together. The fiver fretless coming next will be a different beast altogether because a fiver is to me very different from a four stringer - and a fretless even more so.

But I digress........... :bassist:

I think its been inspiring for all of the TB'rs following your build. :hyper:

Way cool. Keep up the great work and we'll all grab some popcorn, sit back and watch the show!

Thanks for sharing your bass building passion with us. :bassist:

My pleasure man. I am indeed in debt with all you guys. Without you this Über-Jay thing would have been a rather lonely journey :)l

Right Mizio! It's all your fault ...the prototype is nearly finished and I hope to start next month with the
"Meisterstück "... Satisfied ? ;)

:hyper: super-cool! wait....what? did you say 'next month'? what's wrong with this one? :D
