The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

The amendment states that if a player is attempting to screen a goaltender, the player must have his back facing the goaltender. No player or incident in NHL history was as obvious and intentional as Avery's, hence why the rule never existed until he did it. I'm sure every player whose home is the front of the net has had their stick in the line of sight, but that pales in comparison to Avery. If you don't see the difference between the two, that's your issue.

Avery attracts attention, far more than a player like Smyth does. Smyth is a grinder and is always in front of the net, Avery is a pest designed to get under the skin. Avery had zero intention of scoring on that shift, he wanted to rattle Marty, which he did. When Smyth is in front of the net, as much as he is in the way and screening, scoring is the goal (no pun intended).

Lastly, and this sicken me to say, the Red Wings will win the Stanley Cup. Someone has to choke in the finals, and smart money is on the young guns who haven't done it before.

Oh well, worst case scenario, at least I get another picture with the cup (good ole Osgood).

well I hate to correct you and sound like more of a b**ch, but Smyth purposely stood to the side of goalies and held his stick blade at eye level... never mentioned by anyone and jus' saying... what Avery did was outrageous and you knew would never be tolerated, but it was kind of funny to see him rattle the former first lady of hockey the way he did. Of course no-one talks of Martys cross checks and sticks to the b***s that he gave to Avery all series long, but hey, that's hockey. I'm a big fan of Capt. Canada and have mucho respect for the guy, Avery on the other hand is the kinda guy Rangers haven't had since Tikkanen so I like that he's here. He can play too, and I wish that fact had more coverage than his mouth. Hope we can do a deal with him for reasonable money...

Osgood used to live opposite me when he was an Islander. Sweet family, very friendly and humble, it's amazing to see him at this level again. Good for him.

I know you didn't write the piece, but you apparently agreed enough with that pile of nonsense to post it, and that is obviously what I reacted to.

So who pays for your apartments supply of Old Spice, Mike or the Mad Dog?

Smyth did do all the stuff you said, but never got as bad as Avery. Not even close. I'd have sat the clown for the duration and fined his pants off for making bad PR highlights on an international scale. What a bush-league douchebag, looked like an out-take from Slapshot. ("Isn't he still in prison?")

Old Spice? Mike And The Mad Dog???? Humor just isn't one of your strenghs is it?

So you would have fined Avery for doing something completely legal? Interesting POV. And you think hockey survived so long on its good PR, like the Bruins beating up fans, Domi beating up fans, McSorley, Bertuzzi...?

Weak. Oh, maybe you're a Debbie? Sorry I didn't recognize you.

I'm a Philly fan & I had no problema with Domi taking it to that Penalty Box crasher.

it was really funny... tubby had it coming! I always figured Domi as a pure warrior guy, I have no issue, except for the shot on Niedermayer in '01... I'm no fan of the Devils but phew, that was a cheapie and I'm glad Domi apologized so quickly and profusely. Tough to forgive that one.

As a Pen's fan, I was excited to see an article about our enforcer, Georges Laraque, on the front page of ESPN.com. I like the guy even better now.

Extra national media coverage is a side benefit of being a good team playing well in the playoffs, or just part of the conspiracy theory depending on what side you're on.

Alright hockey guys....what am I looking for different from Philly tonight? Any early signs that would indicate they may take the game? Any major changes in strategy to watch for? What about the Pens? Think they'll change anything up?

My newbie thoughts....the Flyers tried being tough guys at the Igloo to intimidate us into mistakes and playing scared. They roughed us up, and pushed us around in both games. It didn't work as they hoped, so I think they go back and try beating us with their overall better knowledge of the game. I think we have them beat on physical skill overall, but those guys are better overall hockey players in my opinion.

Now I gotta go get the TV room set up to watch game three. It starts in less than 30 minutes.....:hyper:

IMO, Philly will stick to the same plan. They're down 2 games to 0...they're at home...they gotta make something happen.
You may notice Pittsburgh playing it more 'safe' (road game hockey) & wait for a mistake (take advantage of Philly's emotion of playing at home).
I'm expecting another close 1-2 goal game...3-1? 3-2?

I'm DVR'ing... I can't see Philly changing much, the games have been close. Sticks on sticks at all times, don't get turned out of position, don't pinch at the blueline when it's risky, stand them up your blueline, capitalize on mistakes, get the power play running... weren't Philly second to Montreal in regular season?
