The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

It doesn't really matter guys. It's just two teams from PA fighting for who will be the sacrificial lamb when the Cup returns to Hockey Town.:D

The first shot from the West comes from the bow of the good ship Burk!

I have not seen a Detroit hockey game all season, but have seen plenty of highlights. They look like a good team. A team it will take the Pen's six games to defeat in the Stanley Cup Finals.

:D :spit:

-Mike

OK, I'm still learning the finer points of hockey. Are you trying to make excuses for losing? :D

-Mike

No, we suck. Just hate it whenever my guys give up a softee.
"It was a garbage goal...it was a garbage win"!!!
(Hopefully you know that movie reference. Otherwise, you are new to hockey!)
:D

Anyway to 'blacken out' a couple teeth on this avatar :D?
Paul???

+1. Sadly it doesn't look good for Philly, a bummer since my Dad could get lower bowl tix for the finals if it's Wings-Philly. I'd LOVE to reprise my 1998 Finals Game Three Octopus Toss :)

OK......that makes sense. So if I see a stick on the ice, and no one is picking it up, it is because it is broken or most likely broken? I'm assuming that if the player were to pick it up, the ref would skate over right away and want to check to see if it is broken, which is why he doesn't chance picking it up? If the player knew for sure it was not broke, then he could pick it up?

-Mike

It a player does simply "drop" it, or have it knocked out of his hand, he will pick it up.

And stopping the play for a broken stick would never work, as a stick breaks for someone almost every shift (especially if it's a Sens game, thanks Spezza).

I remember back in the late 90s I hated Dallas (specifically Modano, Belfour, and Hull)...yet now I find myself cheering for them. Funny how things change.

On the drive into work this morning (approx. 6:00am EDT), I was listening to ESPN radio & heard this nugget-

"Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Western Conference Finals moves into Denver tonight where the Red Wings hold a 2 games to none series lead over the Avalanche".

Huh?

Philly's Power Play looks pathetic.

I couldn't agree more. They can't rely on their PP anymore; especially with Timmo out of the Lineup. It's time Stevens switched to a 3 forwards 2 defensemen Unit for his power play lines. They have to start getting goals at even strength.

Richards did kinda make Malkin pay for trying to be cute.

As for the Crosby no goal; it is easy to make a call from your armchair when you are (in my case) 3000 miles away. It's much different when you are a ref on the Ice, or a video replay judge in Toronto. I'm sure there are kinks to work out, but from what I saw there was no evidence to overturn the call made on the Ice.

The overhead was inconclusive, The goal cam was also inconclusive. IMO I can assume that it went over the line; in fact I know it went over the line, but there was no evidence of "daylight" between the goal line and the puck, end of story

Edit: No word on Coburn yet.

Sadly; as a loyal Red Wings hater, I think you are correct. The type of hockey the dead wings play is almost surreal.

My brother (not a hockey fan) was also watching & he said, "Can't the Flyers decline the penalty...like in football". I wish...better to skate 5-5 than look like crap on your PP &/or give up a shortie.
;)

Schooled...totally.

Remember Fox's "glow puck"...when you could 'see' the puck through the near boards on TV. Too bad they didn't have a compooter program that could extrapolate where the puck was while under Biron's glove.
I won't mention Fox's 'comet trail' off a slapper!
;)

No word on Coburn yet.
I was having a Brian Berard flashback when I saw the replay & Coburn's blood on the ice.

it's a shame no one made him pay for that forearm to Briere's head... the slew foots, high sticks, hits to the head, Malkinstein is really showing himself.

I'm still getting acquainted with the NHL crowd here at TB, but I think I have already found the "Gard" of this crew... :)

Grouchy even a week after his team loses, and taking shots at players from a team that he beat him fair and square. It's all good though marcray. You do know more about hockey than I do, so I hope to learn more from reading your angle on games. I was hoping for less emotions in your analysis, but I understand how it's hard to let go of a loss. I feel your pain.

As for this analysis, that kind of hitting was going on in the whole game. Hatcher was out there to hurt people, so it wasn't like Malkin was skating around trying to start something. He was only trying to keep up with Hatcher.

Oh I'll be grouchy til I die. I'm a hockey fan and I have no interest in Bettman looking to find a Michael Jordan for the NHL, because even if there was one, it should be AO...

And if Hatcher was out there trying to hurt people, then maybe Malkin should go out and try to punch Hatcher in the head... but of course, he's not going to do that is he?

"fair & square", now that's comedy.

Hockey runs on emotion...

...

Enlighten me as to how the Pen's beat your Rangers if it wasn't fair and square. I can see some underhandedness in a single game, but not over five games. Yes, I'm serious, and not trying to stir the pot. I totally understand that guys like Ovechkin and Crosby are being promoted as the stars of the league, but I fail to see how an entire series was slanted to make sure one team won.

I used to be a big fan of the NBA, back in the 80's and 90's. I know the NBA always wanted Jordan to be in the Finals or Magic and Bird. But those players also made plays to win, so it wasn't like they were so-so and the league rigged the playoffs for them to win. So the concept you are eluding to does not totally escape me. I'm just mostly interested in how you see it in the NHL? Are you talking about the diving and favoritism calls for guys like AO and Sid? Do you really think it is that bad in the NHL? If you do, why bother watching the game if you're convinced it's rigged?

I think Malkin was playing the game the same way it was being played by the Flyers. He isn't an enforcer or a fighter, but he did bop that dude in the head. Hatcher came back and started laying guys out, which is understandable in how I interpret the NHL game right now. The Pen's were too busy trying to score and win than to exchange tough hits with Hatcher. Maybe that is why Philly is having a tough time in the first two games? They are trying too hard to intimidate and hurt the Pens? Maybe they should just focus on trying to play their game and score some goals?

-Mike

Mike...droppin' for the team, eh?
;)

No doubt in my mind-
Philly is trying to play 'their' game against a team that has more 'skilled' players. I actually like this Philly team...lotta blue collar-type of players...but they all need to show up. Biron needs to play better, Briere needs to be the same Briere that goes crazy during the playoffs, Special teams need to get back on-track, etc.

Sometimes, a playoff series is a war of attrition...it's gotta go 7 games for that, though. ;)

there's no favouritism for AO... AO is what hockey is all about. If he was American or Canadian, his face would have been on the NHL store's front facade for a year and he would be in the Gatorade commercials. But anyway, here's a good read and it explains the gripe... and it is sour grapes, maybe I'm the soul Ranger fan on here who can confess to being beaten by a good team, but when I watch my man's blood pour and gush onto Igloo ice from a Pens stick, then watch that same man get called for a phantom high stick from his knees on a follow thru, with one minute to go in a tied game... the very same place where the same teams captain dove, away from the puck with one minute and thirty to go in a game days before??? maybe they aren't so sour, maybe they stink, on ice... here goes...

Problems in the NHL Sands

Watching Crosby, watching the Pens this series showed me A LOT about the NHL and NBC and all of the channels which when airing a Pens game turn into "The Crosby Channel."

The NHL has given a lot to the Pens to save them from moving the team. And it's a little too much now.

The Pens will be in the Finals. This I Guarantee.

But when the NHL tries to hand the cup to a player to promote hockey... that's where we need to draw the line.

Crosby needs to man up. He's a great player but with the way the NHL is treating him it's making people lose respect for his play. It didn't take long for be to realize Crosby is not Ovechkin. Ovechkin at least is a hard physical power forward sniper. If anything he is the next Mario. Crosby... well he's not the next anything. He's great, just not great on his own...for now.

Crosby makes the NHL millions of dollars a year. There it a reason why if you touch him on the ice you will get a penalty. It's really making the NHL look bad. Now I'm NOT saying he dives but he has his own class of penalty rules. If half of the things done to Jagr where called I would think different. But some players get bad treatment by the refs and some get baby treatment. Crosby is the baby of the NHL and will be nursed the rest of his career. So as long as he makes them money The NHL will be there to milk him along the way.

The sad thing is Crosby is a great player. Maybe one of the best ever. And everyone knows he could win a cup and will, maybe even a few times throughout his career.

What's even sadder is that the NHL has been giving everything they can to the Pens to make sure they have not gone under. What doesn't make sense is why the NHL has been babying Crosby to the point where it's making real hockey fans sick.

NBC, Versus, everywhere on the NHL network... All they do is promote Crosby. And thats fine I guess but to go as far as help this team more and more by giving them their own set of rules...?? I don't know, it makes them look really bad.

Malkin Slue footing players (major penalty by the way, intent to injure) at the end of games, no call..... Crosby crying to refs (unsportsmanlike conduct). Penalty's being missed and quick whistles on saves by Fluery... something has to give. Their is a reason why Ranger fans booed him when he touched the puck.. and it's not because he's an amazing hockey player and were upset with that. They were upset with the league. They booed him night in and night out to prove a point to people watching.... him being helped by the NHL is not respectful. He lost respect in New York... Philly fans are not far off from Ranger fans... they will see what goes on as well.

The Rangers lost, they played bad, gave up a 3 goal lead in Game 1, but Crosby embellishing a hook away from the puck...a play which the refs gave the game winning power play to the Pens was beyond shady. Then Game 2 the Rangers had a game tying goal taken away on a very quick whistle as the puck crossed the line which ruined game 2. It seems the Pens in their building get a little help from the Refs almost every time.

That being said... the Rangers did NOT deserve to win in my mind, they did not play as a team most nights.

BUT news reports from around the league on game 5 were the same from every analyst in the league.... which were "the refs have to let the Rangers play, and allow them to hit these kids cleanly without fearing a penalty from the refs as protection of these young stars."

Every paper read the same, every analyst felt the same... it's strange to me to hear this, because it shows what people are thinking.... the Pens are getting some help. That seems to be in everyones mind that this might be true. I mean 8-1?? they aren't that powerful of a team behind Malkin and Crosby. They are good.. but not great by any means.

But like I said they were and are better then the Rangers that is without question. But this series should have been 6 or 7 Games without any question. If you truly feel the refs did not help the Pens in these rounds.. well thats a die hard Pens fan trying to brush off what everyone sees.

The league is looking at the Money coming in and trying to attract attention around the sporting world, which is fine.. but to push him through the playoffs to make money... it's kind of scary.... what is my sport turning into? Crosby world? How many cups will they give him?

I'll tell you what, he can win cups on his own and will... but to get help this year and see it and have to watch it.. it's tainting Crosby's cup this year.. cause as far as I can see, If the Pens win the cup... It was done with the help of the NHL. He better do it on his own first before he even thinks he is becoming a great player... WIN A CUP ON YOUR OWN CROSBY... THEN ACT GREAT.

Wouldn't they have given Crosby that goal last night then?

BTW, I'm not disagreeing with some of your theme but I see it as a large organism/machine moving a certain direction. There's luck and bad calls no calls in every hockey game at every level it's part of the game. This new trying to figure itself out NHL seems to have allot of them, they go every which way.

I don't agree with the conspiracy theory thing.

Don't go trying to inject reason, he is ranting.

Just because one knows a lot about hockey doesn't mean one is not delusional. Perhaps he lives with Mike & The Mad Dog?

Blaming the coverage for trying to promote rising stars? I suppose you'd rather have the game played solely for you and the hockey nazis, or anyone else you deem able to "get it" the way you think it should be played?

Sorry, but your conspiracy screed is flat out silly.

"Whaaah, the hot shot American kid is getting more coverage in America than the hot shot foreign kid, Whaaaah!"

The Crosby haters are (expletive deleted) HILARIOUS!

You are even saying the PLAYERS are in on it?????

Step away from the crack pipe hockey boy. :atoz: We are not impressed.

Everyone is equally dirty*, and every team has stupid calls made both for and against them. Did the league botch some calls that probably should have gone against Pittsburgh? Absolutely, but they have done the same against every team...it balances out.

As much as I hate Bettman, Crosby and Malkin, no one got the Pens where they are except for the Pens.

*the word "dirty" can and is replaced with "gritty" once the playoffs roll around.
