The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

This is the first year that I've gotten to watch a full regular season and a good bit of the playoffs. I've seen good portions of Flyer's seasons when I lived in Pottstown PA in '00-'01, and have tried to watch any game I could on VS. This season I picked up Center Ice since I decided there wasn't nearly enough hockey in my life. Take my commentary with a grain of salt.

In depth analysis? Crosby gets high marks for the Springboard Event. He is a bit of a whiner too especially when his team isn't winning. Get over it loosing is part of the game. This is something I hope he grows out of because he is an extremely gifted hockey player, but lacks a lot of credibility amongst fans. (Somebody tell me, was the same true of Gretzky?) Something tells me the league will stop at nothing to see their poster boy hoist the cup.

With that out of the way, here is what I saw during the Philly/Pitts Series.

Pittsburgh had composure even during Game 4 when it looked liked they didn't. They capitalized on mistakes made the Flyers made in their own end. Pittsburgh's D is very underrated, but the system they employ seems to be a 1-2-2 neutral zone trap (grrr). It worked and it kept the Flyers off the scoreboard for the most part.

Pittsburgh puts pucks on net. Most of the goals that they scored on Biron were fluky odd bounce, of the shin/skate, redirection type goals, but thats what happens when you put pucks on net.

I'm not too familiar with the Wings, but I'd say that if they keep their passing game going like I know they can they will beat the trap. Then its just a matter of getting deep and putting it on net.

You can't score if you don't shoot...IIRC, a couple of games, Philly had single digit shot totals through two periods. And the PP? Too much dicking around the boards...Pittsburgh, to their credit, shot the damn thing & got rewarded with bounces, deflections, & SKATES. ;)

First off, Kane & Toews are a great pair! Lots of fun to watch! Hockey in Chicago is on the upswing, which is good for the game as a whole.

In any case, I'm really looking forward to the series. It's gonna be incredible hockey, no matter who wins. :)

I read a lot of hockey blogs and forums and things, and almost all of them have sunk into childish name-calling and stuff like that. Both Wings fans and Pens fans are annoying the crap out of me. I'm glad it hasn't come to that here.

Let's look at it the way it truly is: we're going to see hockey by two of the most exciting, highly-skilled teams in the league. We'll get to see players young and old compete their hearts out. There's going to be great goals, great defensive plays, and great goaltending. If Pittsburgh wins, we get to see an extraordinary young talent in their captain raise his first cup. If Detroit wins, we get to see the first-ever cup won by a team with a European captain.

I honestly hope it goes to a Game 7 just so we can squeeze every ounce out of this one.

Agreed. Much as I hate to see a long-time rival of the Wings getting better, in the grand scheme of hockey, it's a good thing for the league. And, sad to say, Bill Wirtz's passing is the best thing to happen to the Hawks - the televised games are a good thing, and I believe ALL home game will be aired next season. How long has it been since that happened?

Agreed. As much as I'm blatantly rooting for the Wings, this is going to be one barnburner of a series.

Yep, that's why I stay out of them for the most part. I remember rec.sports.hockey on the bbs system back in the early 90's being far worse than what I see now. A poster by the name of Roger Maynard was infamous for his Maple Leafs rants - the blue line is blue out of respect for Toronto was one of his sigs, and sadly I STILL remember it 15 years later. I hope that we keep it highbrow here.

Well said.

Sorry, I've gotta disagree with you on that one. Wings in six. If it goes 7, Pens will likely win it imho. Plus, I'm enjoying having my blood pressure back in the healthy range (120 over 80). It was up in the 170 over 140 range for a while, but a huge change in diet and cutting out energy drinks and soda helped a lot. If it goes to game 7, it'll probably spike up there again. :)

Gary Bettman is still an Arse. The Schedules were released today. and not only are the Wings and Pistons playing on all the same nights, but the Home games are the same night! I don't own a split screen TV, what a pain!:rollno:

Not only that he's going to try to compete with ABC with Versus on the same night in the same town for the same sports fans. A ratings debacle guaranteed.:eyebrow:

Not to mention that while Game 1 is being played at Joe Louis, the Tigers are playing at Comerica. Since I'm a Tigers season ticket holder, I'll be missing Game 1. :crying::crying::crying: Why can't the schedule makers consider these conflicts. :crying::crying::crying:

I feel bad for those in Detroit who have to make the choice of which series to watch, even though I personally could care less about hoops, it's a shame that fans of both have to decide. Had Bettman had the foresight to schedule around the NBA Finals, hockey could have reached a much larger audience with what seems to be the best fiinals in years on tap.

The more I think about this series, the more I see a strong parallel with the Oilers-Islanders in the 1980s. The Oilers lost to the defending champion Islanders then came back the next year to create their own dynasty. The marketing blitz around Crosby mirrors that around Gretzky. I think the NHL missed a golden opportunity to market the young stars on BOTH teams - Datsyuk/Zetterberg and Crosby/Malkin.

I'm heading to visit my parents for the long weekend, so I most likely won't be able to post any thoughts until after game 2 when I return. They only have dialup and I don't know if I'll have the patience to log on the slow connection instead of enjoying the time with them.

I'll say it again - Wings in six if both teams maintain the status quo healthwise and the refs call it down the middle. Regardless, whether the Wings win or lose, I just hope the officiating doesn't get in the way of some tremendous hockey. LET THEM PLAY!!!! I've got a feeling both sides will have some tremendous highlights to cheer from their team, and to grudgingly give props to from the other team after swearing about the goal against.

The schedule is laughable. GB has now proven himself and his regime to be the biggest failures in sports. How can this long delay and this ridiculous schedule possibly be the work of sane adults? (sorry detroit!) The league is struggling, yet the players and owners are still making millions, and fans feel more disenfranchised than ever. Nice job Gary, nice job.

Pens in 6

Has this series even started YET?

On a serious note,

IF the Wings win the cup, how in Darren McCarty going to party it up in the locker room without the threat of possibly going into a alcohol relapse?

OR

IF the Pens win the cup, how is Crosby going to party it up without getting a Minor In Possession of alcohol?

HaHa; BURN. His playoff beard is a joke. :D
