I saw them open for the Chilis, and was thoroughly unimpressed. It basically seemed like a wall of undefined noise, without any actual songs (as I've heard a few others in this thread say). I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was a bad mix, but it certainly didn't make me want to run out and get their CD.

Flea only contributed a track or two to the album. The guy they tour with, though, it's definately ill, in a not-too-flashy sort of way.

I think the Mars Volta is a great band. They have an original sound, which is very hard to find these days. They are not the best band to ever walk the earth, but in my opinion they are damn good.

The Mars Volta is an amazing band but in my opinion they're no ATDI. They do a get alot of hype but I think they deserve it, but De-Loused isn't everyones cup of tea so I respect other's opinions. Cheers...

I don't know what you've heard. I'm not some kind of elitist guy but really I don't hear much screaming and squealing and whining on De-Loused, which I've listened to I don't know how many times. There is nothing screamo at all about The Mars Volta or any related projects, that is unless you get your screamo from Guitar World.

I downloaded the album this week on TB recommendation to see what the deal is. I definitely am pro-Mars Volta. I don't think they're the greatest thing ever, but it's a good album that I would enjoy listening to repeatedly. Anybody that hates theirs, and wants to send it to a good home, contact me.

Last year though, I was at a random concert and got a Sparta promo single with "Cut Your Ribbon." THAT f'ing kicked ass!

I used to listen to a lot more weird music. I have gotten rid of a lot of those albums as they turned out to not in fact hold long-term interest for me.

MArs Volta in my opinion falls in line with a lot of great bands out there like rush IMHO in the fact that if they had a different singer I'd buy. Although after seeing a live broasdcast of them on MtV he did fit in the mix better in my opinion than he did on the album. Great musicians though .

I listened another dozen times. There are hooks, though they don't stick in my head afterwards it's still a decent listen. There are hallmarks of everything I like in my fave bands, just not as much of those elements.

I think the people wigging out over this haven't likely heard some braver bands that are out there, but given the high hype darling background these guys come from I have to give full marks for what amounts to a dangerous sharp left turn in their careers. The song titles though, those are really stupid.

I certainly like it MUCH more than the past two years big hype albums - Tool's Lateralus (I much preferred the previous one), and QOTAS's "Songs For The Deaf". Those too, I believe, people were much more impressive to people who haven't heard more obscure bands that do it better. That said, I'd rather hear those on the radio than the crap that's otherwise on there.

You forgot Ikey, the keyboardist. I love that guys playing(not just in TMV, he's on lots of stuff).

The album is a tribute to a friend of the band Named Julio Venegas, an artist who had a really tough life and committed suicide. 3 years(i think) of his life was spent in a coma, hence the comatorium. its really fictional but based on Julio and the album is partly about the dream adventures of a character named Cerpin Taxt(Julio) while in his coma. The whole story is actually pretty interesting, especially if you apply it to the albums lyrics, check out Invalid Link Removed for the whole story.

I have to admit - I'm really starting to get into this band. I actually do not listen to commercial FM or anything else that might result in excessive hype because I have about as much use for baseless hype as SMASH and we all know how much HE hates hype!

I had never even heard of these guys before reading some of the posts on this board. Now, thanks to some of you, I've "discovered" them myself and I dig 'em.

i didn't listen to the mars volta until someone compared our sound to them... so i picked it up, and realized that person was nuts. sorry guys, not into them... and i don't know why people think we sound like them.

I don't like these guys at all. The singer is excruciatingly annoying to me. But on the other hand (the one drenched in irony), I love Geddy Lee's voice. Go figure! Different strokes, etc etc.

Bingo. Whether you like The Mars Volta or not, you have to ask yourself: do you want more bands like them, or more bands like Nickelback?

I've read people talking about Marz Volta screaming, have you listened to the album? There is no screaming at all, nor live, I've seen them 3 times now and never once have I heard a scream. Live they jam a lot, it's actually quite good. I think a lot of people mistake Marz Volta for ATDI, they are two far far different machines. Take the music for what it is; I think to many people go into it expecting to be blown away, or to be captivated. Everyone has different tastes in music, just because you don't like them doesn't mean they are bad musicians, I see lots of classic rock as well as Mediterranean influences. There is a difference between not liking a band and bashing them by saying they aren’t good.

I was slightly disappointed with Mars Volta for the fact that At The Drive-In was easily one of the best bands to come around in the past decade. They can't hold a candle to ATD-I.

By saying "braver bands", who are you referring to? And the song titles, some of them are in latin and french I believe, and the others are comprehensive that have to do with the song titles, so before assuming they're "really stupid" you should understand what they're all about.
