The anti-Mars Volta thread.

I certainly like it MUCH more than the past two years big hype albums - Tool's Lateralus (I much preferred the previous one), and QOTAS's "Songs For The Deaf".

I am definitely one of the people wigging out over this band, and you are right, I probably haven't heard some the braver bands that you are talking about. I consider this a good thing, because that means there is a bunch of music out there that I will really dig, I just haven't found it yet. :)

I agree with your statement about QOTSA. I bought that cd based purely on the hype. I think it is decent, but I didn't think it was all that. I did however like Lateralus quite a bit.

I saw a few peoples signatures around here referring to how great Mars Volta is.

This is where I find file-sharing to be beneficial. I downloaded five songs, and took a listen. Not for me, so I deleted them.

I would have really been pissed if I had dropped $20 on the non-returnable CD.

If you don't want to spend $20 buying a cd, be smart and don't get it at the mall or expensive retail store. Go for BEST BUY.

And when did The Mars Volta say they were brave? And when did anyone say The Mars Volta are brave? I was simply asking what bands he considered to be brave, not for people to say "oh TMV isn't brave at all compared to these bands etc..."

And a band can't really be "brave" now in my opinon, nothing's shocking anymore.

Downloading...good option too. Usually when I download songs I'll listen to em a few times, cuz if I just get any song and listen to it once and not give it full attention, it usually isn't that great. But alot of my favorite bands I've had to give a few listens to get into it ya know?

There's a couple of CD shops here that have a no-questions-asked "if you think it sucks, bring it back and here's your money" policy. How I love independant CD stores.

You've not seen the press over here. NME, Kerrang, even things like the Times were all over them, saying they're the best thing ever (until The Darkness appeared) and how brave and outlandish they were. Fair enough, about as far out as most of these reviewers will have heard is Tool, but surely they can tell interesting, exciting music from LedZep-esque full-on wankery, which is what I saw when I saw TMV live.

So, I don't think TMV said that they're brave, but the press has said that.

Make of that what you will.

EDIT: I'm listening to ATD-I's Relationship Of Command album right now..... how do I think it compares to TMV? It kicks TMV's ass, full stop. IMO, of course.

It's hard for me to be against Mars Volta...

Omar is one of not many (very very few actually) Puerto Ricans making it in ROCK... not latin-pop or salsa... ROCK. I'm tired of the Latin Lover Macho Man Waist-Shaking Smiling Dude Stereotype (gee, who am I thinking about???)

Anyway, I've yet to hear a lot of their stuff. The one song I've heard carefully is waaay weird. But it's fresh...

Besides, Mars Volta or Just-in???

word to all yall moms!
TMV is a pretty talented bunch of guys... if its not fo you ok, i also thought Weather Report beyond me, but after a few yrs of heavy weather collecting dust i poped it in the mix and they are a much different group to me now! granted Jaco was always the badist... "ya dig".

my point is that tastes change, i can respect that TMV doesn't grab everyone, but go back to it in a few mos. yrs. and we'll see then:bassist:

I totally agree with that point, whenever I pop something in that I haven't listened to in a while I always notice a ton of things I never did before.

As far as what is decent music, I don't really want to get into a massive conversation about that. Suffice it to say ,IMO, it's something that is 'real' as opposed to a record labels idea of what people like to listen to.

going forward pls insert a "IMHO"

how would you feel if i said celine dion sucks wind

I would just assume that anything said on any thread on any forum is an opinion. Saying so is redundant. Besides, smilies are more fun.
