The argument for (or) against mixing cabs - example: 115 & 410

Just like last year's answer - vertically stacked 2x10s.
Anybody want to make a prediction on the next big amp thing?
The thing is, the science does not tell us that mixed drivers will never work. Rather, it informs that there are some challenges brought about by mixing speaker sizes, and that matching drivers avoids these issues. There are, no doubt, some mixed-cab combinations that work, and work amazingly well, whether planned so or accidentally so. There are also some that will perform less than optimally.
It's my guess that many of us acquire a mixed-driver rig not because we and evaluated other possibilities, including matched drivers, but because we think it's the right solution. We believe that 115 will add low end to our 410. We believe we need to add a 210 to our 115 to get some punch. We see our heros rock mixed drivers and sound great doing so (never mind that we don't hear that mixed-driver stage sound, but rather the front-of-house only). We start with one and add the other. This is how I arrived at mixed drivers. I imagine others may have followed a similar path.
If you rock mixed drivers and love them, keep rocking. If you're looking to add another cab, the safe route is a matched cab. If you llike the cab you have, another will give you more. If you don't like the sound you have, if something is missing, mixing drivers can be a crap shoot. If you don't like your one-cab sound, I suggest looking for a replacement rather than an add-on. Matched drivers will work well, where a mixed-cab rig might work well. If you're considering mixed drivers, I recommend you try them and compare them to two of the same cabs. Otherwise, you'll never really know if that mixed-driver rig is better than what matched drivers bring.
Beaten to death, this topic? I suggest it's a valuable one for many who want to learn; there are compelling arguments on either side. And it's easy enough to avoid if it riles you. However, I will agree that the topic usually devolves into -- well, let's just leave it at it devolves. As for climate change, holes in the atmosphere and flat-Earth arguments, Off-Topic might be a better forum. Peace all.

Thats the beauty of science. It doesnt rely on what you or anyone else believes.
If you or anyone else wants to discuss the scientific veracity of climate change, there are many places for that. Talkbass' Amps and Cabs forum is not one of them.
