The argument for (or) against mixing cabs - example: 115 & 410

I find it kinda ignorant and biased.
It's simple math. There can be no bias, and the only ignorance is willfully choosing to not educate yourself on said science.

But it's cool man to each his own opinion
It's not an opinion based topic. It is very simple science. Discussing opinions here would be like saying that 5 plus 5 equals 11, which could never be correct despite how strongly one wanted to believe it be so.

Use what you want, learn the science behind how this stuff actually works, or even better, do both.

Crossovers, direct power. BECAUSE different frequencies, consume different levels of current (watts) within the content of the signal.
Proof: when was the last time you saw a 300 watt 6" midrange speaker?

That is correct for passive crossovers. Electronic crossovers set crossover points and power distribution. On the better electronic crossovers adjustment of phase, time alignment, HP, LP filters are also available.

see middle of post #10.

i could still use a rock to drive a nail, and that would work right?
but a hammer does a much better job. will yield better results, with a reduced chance of failure and injury.

you can keep using a rock, I prefer a hammer. they achieve the same end result. One is definitively better/more efficient/accurate/safer.
If a rock makes the sound I want to hear, I'll be a regular customer at the quarry.
I understand what you are saying, and technically, it seems correct; however, one last time, rather than a text book, I'll use my ear.
In over 50 years, I've had 3 amps blow. One was a Traynor that was the back line, so I don't know it's history. The other was an old Super Bassman. The fabric insulation on a wire wore through vibrating against the chassis. The other was a Standel Super Imperial. It was a very early SS and couldn't handle dirty power from a circuit the stage shared with the heating system and a room full of pinball machines.
Point is, I've never seen it as a problem and I would only play a rig I like the sound of.

I would like to say one other thing. You and I seem to disagree from time to time, but I respect you because you are always a gentleman and state your case without being rude or insulting.

No he is running in to a massive PA with IEM's. If that rig on stage is on, it isnt making a damn bit of difference out front, and isnt actually what flea is even hearing on stage.

Damn it... Must resist posting.

Has anyone perhaps considered the 'aesthetics' of cab stacking of big touring bands?

A 410 and 115 will fit into the same form factor cabinet. The set designer will look at them and think stacks of those cabs form a nice grid (whether they are all connected or not is immaterial). If you *were* to run 10s and 15s together at a sensible ratio - 210/115 - the resulting arrangment of square cabs and rectangular cabs all gets a bit more Mondrian.

Just saying.

agreed :) and mutual. (if the comments contain what seems to be an insult, it's not!!
it's humor at your expense, :) but not to ridicule, rather to clarify/quantify my point)
my favorite phrase (thanks grandpa! RIP)
Opinions are like rectums(insert unacceptable a-word):
Everyone has one. Some just stink more than others.

one size does not in-fact fit all.
EX: i know a guy that his silvertone guitar is set up terribly, Frets have grooves in them, roundwound strings covered in rust, plays through a silvertone amp. No effects.
Replaces strings if/when they break.
SMOKING PLAYER. killer tone. he's in his 70's and this setup is his first and only. Same cord even, when it develops a short he repairs it. it's now @ 5 feet long, started as 20'
so i "get" your side too :)

I played in insanely loud bands in the 80's and at one point get this:
Sunn0))) 2000s driving an 18" folded horn, faced into the stage on 4x6" boards for air movement, and the input was split to a GK 1001 driving a 412 slant guitar cab---
that was replaced by my first true highend rig:
Trace Elliott AH600 bi-amped w/ SWR Goliath 4x10 top Big ben 18 bottom.

That is an awesome story, and a great example. That ol' dude never worried about what he was playing on only that he was playing. Fantastic example and attitude.

I bet that guy is happy as a clam too?

Argument for: Nothing, I can't think of a single benefit of mixing speaker sizes vs. matching
Argument against: Sending equal power to unequal surface areas is a loss of power vs matching at best, a blown speaker(s) at worst

Seriously, why would you mix speaker sizes? Smaller speakers aren't inherently "faster" or "higher" and I will judge you if you say that to me. "I got the 10s for the highs and the 15 for the lows!" No, you just got an inefficient setup and somehow never discovered Google.

nah he's the very definition of the GOF. he hates his stuff he's just too miserly to buy something new.
he'll play someone else's stuff if offered :)
he also blows harp, plays passible bass and can whack the traps (as he calls them)
he's one of those guys, still tooling around in a 1960's Chevy II that by all accounts gets washed when it rains, and is held together by the rust :D

additional note:
A Particular 410 with a particular 115 may work well.
Just a 410 of any type may not work well with just any 115.

Mixed drivers=mixed results: may work, may not.

matched drivers/cabs = predictable results (not NECESSARILY a tone that is liked by the player)

All cabs regardless of driver design OR even brand name are not created equal

I can read all of the threads.. but what this tells me is that science and the opinion of some TB'ers is that when Pro's like Flea runs 3 15" cabs and 4 4x10" cabs at every show, he is blowing up his cabs and sounding like a turd - or maybe the laws of acoustic science cease to exist when he's on stage.. idk - I posted an article and pictures to try to prove what is being done in a real world situation

To address the quote, without following the cables to see what is connected to what, it's impossible to know what is really going on. The wireless receiver plugged into that 2001RB could be tuned to the local taxi dispatch frequency and the 2001 zeroed across the board, meanwhile Fleas actual wireless receiver is plugged into two full racks of Radial gear back stage, complete with voodoo priest sacrificing a chicken during every song to make sure only the good juju can exist in the rack area...

What you've treaded into here is a religious debate, one of the few allowed on TB, hence the level of engagement and vitriol. Faith-based beliefs, like there is no downside to using mixed drivers, traditionally are stalwartly defended by their believers and even in the face of incontrovertible evidence, a goodly portion of the believers will simply refuse to accept it. How many folks did the Catholic church murder for even suggesting the earth was flat? How long after solid scientific proof existed were those murders still being carried out? That's the same dynamic here.

If wandering into minefields is your thing, I'll suggest you make your next thread about the effect of wood on tone in an electric instrument... This, this is positively civilized compared to that one...
