He had 4 StingRays in total:
  • 1994 in Black that he used most of 1995-1997. This was used to record They Came to Conquer ...Uranus. He gave this one away after wrecking it in the original Josie video shoot, which took place in a flooding room, filmed in a water tank.
  • 1997 in Powder Blue, which was used in the latter half of 1997 and well into 1998. This one is in the released Josie video AND makes a quick appearance in American Pie. It was given to producer Chris Holmes, who still has it.
  • 1998 in Peach/Salmon, that he used for a good chunk of 1998. Gave it away to the bassist of Fenix TX in October of 1998, during their first tour together.
  • 1998 in Metallic Green, that he got in the latter half of 1998 and used to record most of Enema of the State AND still has.
Up to 97 instruments, btw. Need to figure out how to celebrate hitting 100 :laugh:

Wow I can't believe he wrecked that Stingray for an aborted video when they were barely famous, and yet when he had millions of dollars he pulled an MIM P-Bass to wreck in Stay Together.

I had recently read that for the Dude Ranch recording he used some studio owned bass, like a Schecter or something. Do you know anything about that?

It was indeed a Schecter: the most we heard from Mark was that it was some "weird bubinga wood bass" with active pick-ups, and he hit up Mark Trombino who confirmed Schecter, probably the Stiletto Studio 4.

I won't be releasing it until it's finished, unfortunately, and I expect that to be a while still. I'm working to speak with the people who made Mark's basses, am figuring out when missing basses go missing, making sure details are right.

With 101 basses, that's a heck ton of information, photos, videos, etc. to sift through.

@Odinbass I'm working on a full on compendium/guide/wiki on all of Mark's basses, or as many as I can get information on. I'm up to 80 instruments (mostly basses, or course), with something like 26 missing, given away, broken.

Hey (if you are still following this thread) Is the blue ATST bass a Lake Placid finish or Aqua Marine Metallic? I know they are similar but being a nerd I want to know.

If you watch the '99 MTV Castaway Countdown; the sun is shining on the bass and it does look less dark and less green than Aqua Marine Metallic. More Lake Placid.

The only reason Im not 100% sure is because Aqua Marine Metallic was offered as a standard color in 1999 whereas Lake Placid wasnt.

1999 was the only year he used this bass. i dont know the history whether he bought it off the rack or he was working with Fender Custom already. Tom already had his custom strat then so he might've had his pick of colors and specs at the very least.

This is all my speculation and observation of course.

It was a custom job from Fender: It had the pearloid pickguard which, like Lake Placid Blue, wasn't a common option, had the single volume knob that became the standard on his basses, and had the Basslines pick-ups from the get go.

Later in '99 is when the Candy Apple Red Jazz body bass shows up, followed soon by Lettuce (the Surf Green one). The Lake Placid Blue ATST bass had a short run, but that video and Warped Tour '99 were one heckuva time to be a main bass.

OP again.... I unsurprisingly got tapped to play in a Blink 182 tribute. Thought I'd share the basses I am currently using.

On the left is a Mark Jaguar, direct from his site. It's nice he sells these independently and makes them affordable, but I'm not a huge fan of how they come. Pau Ferro fingerboard and generic pickups. I installed the correct pickups, but then also installed a concentric volume/tone stack. I just had to have the tone control, the pickups were so brash.

On the right is a frankenstein P-Bass modeled after the 1999 Mark Custom #1 that I mentioned in a previous post. Lake Placid Blue body. Same pickups. Kept the tone knob for same reason as above.

My guitarist and drummer have obscene collections of Blink gear. I'm just getting started.

This was a fun thread to read through. Mark actually opened my eyes to the J neck on a P bass configuration and inspired my own foray into modding and making my own frankenbass which includes a J neck and Seymour Duncan QPs on an SX P body.

I do think his signature style with the J body is even cooler, but the routing that would require is beyond my expertise right now.

Looks just like his 'backup bass' from the 90s, which was featured in the Dammit video and possibly the Whats My Age Again video.

Im pretty sure they extended up to 2003. Its cool thats rare but I will tell you there was a collective disappointment that they put it out in shell pink as opposed to the hot pink he actually played. Most people opted for the green/blue.
