The Chuck Rainey thread

One of the greats, and arguably my favorite bassist ever. Chuck is what I aspire to become, though I fall far, far short. His playing never fails to inspire me and I'm at a place where I can hear a line and almost certainly know it's him. Such an incredible body of work by someone most people have never heard of.

Chuck Rainey always seemed to be a pretty humble player.

He was a contributor to the James Jameson Standing in the Shadows project . He speaks of his relationship with James and his family. If you haven’t listened to his comments, I would highly suggest it.

He was a lot different than James but both were monsters.

Quite often these session players were the element that made the artists they backed up - Standing in the Shadows kind of says it all.

OMG I love that Sanford and Son song! Didn't know it was him on bass. WOW. My friend at work had this song for a ringtone on his phone. Every time he got a call everybody sitting around him started laughing.

I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating. I got to meet Chuck at the 1991 NAMM show. He could not have been more gracious and friendly. Before handing me his business card, he wrote his home phone number and told me to contact him if I was ever near his home. A real class act.

This album is incredible. It was my introduction to Chuck Rainey. Here are two of my favorites...killer gospel bass.
