Can anyone describe the top characteristics of Chuck Rainey basslines?

I agree with Jerry@ … he did some very tasty double stops.

Also, he played with a strong sense of feel and a super light touch.

He is always tasteful and solid.

Chuck's playing on this album was what made me want to get serious about electric bass. So much to learn:

My LS and I are planning to work up a duet on this. I don't think I'll play every note Chuck played if I'm trying to sing it like this. But it will be epic. What a great song.

I would just say his inventiveness. Listen to his playing and ask yourself if you would have thought of any of it on your own.

His tasty use of double stops were always one of the things I've always dug about his playing.

Exactly! The double stops in this song always caught my ear from a long time ago. Not to mention the tasty licks as well. He also does arpeggios with a couple notes way up high and the root down low.

Woody and Dutch (on the slow train to Peking) on Rickie Lee Jones' Pirate album is an encyclopedic display of bass styles up to that time (1980). Groove playing, Ray Brown style walking, Rainey style walking while slap/popping octaves, call and answer with Jones and lots of improv on a track that just jumps. Still a favorite of mine after all these years.
And Aretha's Rock Steady, of course.
