tell us a bit more about yourself and your bass & combo journey!

Well, if your security clearance is sufficient, you can view my complete file in the Rumble Club archives. After filling out (in triplicate) the requisite forms of course.
However, I can give a brief summation here:

• Played bass in a local band in the Phoenix area in the early-mid 90’s
• A whole lot of life happened, peppered with some questionable decisions on my part, resulting in the sale of all my musical equipment and a brief 3 decade hiatus from music in general (give or take a year or 5)
• Through my daughter, now 18, I rediscovered the joys of making musicalish noises.
  
• I have since been on a mission to replace gear that I no longer have and relearn chops that I may or may not have had.
  
• One of those newly acquired gears was an Ampeg BA110.
• The little Ampeg, sadly, couldn’t cut it though and was replaced by the Rumble 150 which I am quite happy with…for now

Just because I had a great mid-day jam with my neighbor playing more current (not 100 yr old Jugband songs…) music (Brown eyed girl, Alison, Wild Horses…. i thought I would join the combo stacks posts. My garage is nearing completion and so we will be able to clear out the casita and make it a real art studio/sound room/guest room. Till then, my stuff is stacked like this on a moving dolly, very handy. Peavy ECOUSTIC 112, Fender R200cV3, KSR 115 powered PA combo.

I’ve got some deciding to do. My music shop is closing down, and has cut the price on the Orange Crush Bass 50 down to $390 (They're usually $500 here). Do I grab it next pay, and try to sell off the 25 to recoup some of the cost, which will mean at the end of the day, I've potentially got a 50 for bugger all cost, or do I hold the line and keep enjoying the sounds that I'm getting out of my 25, and keep saving up for that VW gearbox that I need.

Argh! I hate making decisions!

Don’t think that extra 25 watts will matter much. Hold the line and get the 100 down the road.

What are the pros and cons of the two amps as you see/hear/play/carry them?

You could always hire me to decide for you, but you'd have to make the decision to do that...

Good question. At 8kg, I love how light the 25 is, and it is perfectly suited to my present circumstances. I don't have my own place. I am presently boarding and practice in my room, so keeping the volume down is a Good Idea. When I've had the opportunity to turn it up, it sounds pretty good with or without the Alpha Omega going. And seeing as how I have the Alpha Omega which I can run XLR straight into the dSnake at church, the 25 is probably loud enough for me when I start playing there too.

Initially I wanted the 50 because I could use the effects loop as line out to DI, and because it has distortion built in. The character of the distortion is quite different to the Alpha Omega, so it is still a plus, but only a small one. I guess it is now just a bit of an upgrade for more longer term viability. Also, it's a good 6kg heavier going from an 8" speaker to a 12".

I suppose at the end of the day there is no real need for me to upgrade, just that the price makes it a tempting opportunity. I reckon I'll have to drag my friend over to the shop so we can see what the 50 sounds like.

It seems that you are satisfied with the 25, so I am assuming that if this deal did not occur, you would not desire the 50, but would want a gearbox.
Keep your focus on the gearbox, once you have it you can shift your focus.

For me, it comes down top tone and volume. Doubling the wattage makes very little difference in how loud the amp is. But the speaker may more more air. I'd compare how well I like the controls, the tone, and volume, along with DI features, etc.

If the Orange simply crushes it (ha!), and I was confident I could get enough for the Rumble to still get the gearbox soon, I'd get it. Otherwise, I'd stick with the Rumble and get a bigger amp later for gigs where I needed the volume w/o going through a PA (or as my stage bass monitor).

Since we never go through a/the PA, the amp is it-for the room and me. I take the amp that will cover the room. I use the B25 for the concert band and pick from the R40, 100, or 200c for the 'rock' band's gigs. Rarely the 200c any more. Just don't need it for the places we play. We kinda tend to be live background music-per management's preferences.
