The Combo Club

To all the Vox brethren out there, most notably Doc Intrepid, I woke up to the sound of music, but Mother Mary wasn't there. Neither was a ten-inch speaker in the Mini Superbeetle bass cab.

I went to the Vox website to read their newest rig’s spec sheet, updated on the 24th of this month. Though Vox themselves have said the speaker in the cab is a ten, Sweetwater is showing it as an eight and now the manual reflects the same data. Can I tell you how disappointed I am?

I thought for the size of that cab, a chunky piece of wood? by itself, there should’ve at least been a ten in there with the idea of maybe using it With a gaggle of acoustic players possibly. I was hoping for something larger, and no, I wasn’t planning on buying another cab to run in it’s place. I’m fresh out of cabinets and the Vox is already expensive as it is.

So unless Doc, Doggie, KBD, or anyone else can talk me out of scrapping the holiday plan to put one under the tree, I’m heading to Nowhereland. Sigh .

BTW, happy Saturday! I’m actually heading to the man cave today to rescue my stuff. Wish me luck.

I don't envy you moving anything, even for a man cave rescue. Good luck!

Thank you, kind sir. What’s killing me is we continue adding to the room by sticking so-called “your stuff” boxes near the doorway. It’ll be 2020 before I get through it all! Who on earth needs this much junk. Oh wait...that’s me I’m talking about.

Never mind.

Here is some evidence that it is 10". I looked briefly through the PDF they provide, but I could not find the place where they indicate the speaker size.

Yeah I’m not plussed by a 1x8 for that price, too expensive

Alas, it is but an 8" driver in the li'l Vox VX50BA, which did carry a good-sized church sanctuary in full contemporary Christian service, and did hold well it's own and more with over a dozen acoustic Americana musicians in flagrante jamness.

Spying the much larger cab of the Mini SuperBeetle, than of the VX50BA, I daresay, if such be properly tuned, even an 8" could be of awesome gloriosity! Though, much more so if a 10", of course.

I’d have to hear it, I’d be up for the head separately anyway as I have cabs but hey I’ve been known to buy crazy things before

Doc, check out how late I am writing this. That’s because of all the worry in the speaker size of this rig! I looked at your link and yes, it does mention a 10” driver. But if you click on the support link you’ll find the manual dated 7/24/19 and it has written an 8” driver. What gives, Vox? Make up your mind! I guess we’ll just have to see in the fall.

The VOX spokesperson at NAMM seemed really knowledgeable.:rollno: I think he mighta needed labels to distinguish his arse from his elbow.:wacky:

Listened to The Toons’ “Punk Polka.” Like the comments mentioned, it sounded like Weird Al a lot. Good toon.

Finally got the second vehicle in the garage after goesring the space of house stuff. Worked on the Family Room, but the Music Room/Fearless Leader Hideout hasn’t been touched. If anything, more stuff has found a home there.

I’m going to sleep...

PS: had a dream last night of posting a PJB Double Four and liking it. M, did you have anything to do with that? Maybe it was the pizza I had for supper...

"... a bit of undigested cheese," thought Scrooge.

I don't have anything to kick in at the present, other than my Hartke HD150 is turning out to be one of the finest combos I believe I've ever played through. The HyDrive 15, and the 7 Band EQ are working better than I anticipated when I acquired it.

How cool is it to have a 15 in a small package like that. It's a 15 I cut my (bass) teeth on. Er, speaking of.

The Vox straps are a natural accompaniment to these mini-Vox amps .... And a violin bass ... Was offered the chance to play an Epi violin bass and declined. Don't know what it is, maybe just a bias toward FSOs.

Ah, the control console, Phil Jones BG-400 for all to see.

A combo for doublers is what we have here. Two inputs with full EQ and a single master. What has my full attention now is the limiter on the right. Pretty simple affair. One on/off switch, one knob and one blue light. And boy howdy does it do a great job. With the knob turned full right, there is no/little limiter action. Turn anti-clockwise to put it in action. It's a 3-1 compression ratio (think that's what the fine manual sez). For every 3 db above the threshold I set, the increase in level is 1 db.

And you know what? I like it. Enough to say: yep, limiting compressor on the pedalboard (to be built).

While it may appear a lot of dosh for a 300 / 500 watt combo, the whole package is a Phil Jones amp plus a Compact 4 cab with a carry strap.

The Elf on top drives a C4. I really don't need the BG-400 and C4 running together for practice .... And makes for a very good test lab. PJB is all about My Bass Only Louder, and that's cool. Big attraction for me as one who wants to know what these pups and strings and technique really sound like. The C4 is full range. Take that, Rotosounds! Zing Zing Zing sounds like an Amish declaration (different discussion). In practical terms, it means I hear the full range of anything plugged into the Aux In. It could be forced into doubling for singer duty ....

Right. The Elf through the C4. And this is what a coloured tone is all about. It's a really good coloured tone. There's a lot going on in the mids, it's complex and very musical. Which makes me think the Elf combos are home run city. Like a little PJB combo, you're getting a high end cab with a full Elf.

Listening to the Ampeg BA-108 next to the Elf is a completely different experience. The Ampeg sounds like an Ampeg, even this little practice amp! There's no way I could reasonably expect the BA-108 to roll low E thunder like the other two. That's not the point, anyway.

Yeah, I noticed that in the video too. Had the feeling that he wasn’t prepped to answer basic questions. Makes Korg look kinda bush-league, but comments after the video seemed positive about the amp.

Just checking out some combos and looking for vintage tone. How do the Hartke 15’s do? I notice they don’t have gain knobs. What the difference in sound between the KB15 and the HD150?

Hey Mo. I’m not Hartke-experienced, but was under the impression they were a more modern tone compared to an old school Ampeg tone. You’ll have to try ‘em if you can or see if anyone else chimes in to give you further knowledge.

Outdoor open mic/jam today. 'Feels like' only 100 w/ a negligible breeze conveniently blocked by buildings.:banghead:

Best of luck, my friend, with your gig today. Stay in the shade, keep hydrated, and check on the elderly and pets. At least that’s what our weather people tell us at this time of year. In the winter, it’s the opposite but same recommendations.

Have fun today, GP!

Same photo as GK Club- way too many shadows.

GK MB212 II,
Gig worthy.
Have a Mesa 18" that needs power and the combo-combo will be truly any-gig ready- except both my Tahoes are gone and the 18 will barely fit in my wife's SUV, never mind my daily driver.

Number please; if you will have me.

Not as much whining about the smaller speaker, as you’ve proven, Doggie, that the ‘lil VOX works its magic playing out, but I’ll be disappointed if I end up spending almost four bills and can’t use it with a group of mixed acoustics and electrics. Also, no DI means if you run line out to the PA you lose the Nutube tone and ability to use it as a monitor. I need to hear and play it, I guess.

M, where’s the PBJ endorsement I was hoping to read after telling you about my vision while slumbering? :hyper:
